Spain’s 10-year Obligacion yield hit an intraday high of 4.13%, near its highest level since December 2013, before easing to 4.07% after the government called a snap election to strengthen its mandate.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called an early election for November 29 following mass protests over rising housing costs, just days after right-wing parties blocked two laws aimed at tackling the country’s housing crisis proposed by his leftist minority government.
Recent polls suggest the elections could result in a right-wing coalition government between Spain's main conservative People's Party and the anti-immigration Vox party.
Political uncertainty across France, Germany and now Spain, alongside concerns over French public finances and rising debt-servicing costs, is adding to the challenges facing the European economy.
