Slovak Current Account Gap Narrows in January

Slovakia’s current account recorded a deficit of EUR 489.8 million in January 2026, narrowing from EUR 692.4 million in the same month a year earlier.

The goods account shortfall declined to EUR 82 million from EUR 253.4 million in January 2025, as well as the primary income gap to EUR 307.3 million from EUR 350.6 million.

On the other hand, the services account surplus decreased to EUR 23.9 million from EUR 26.9 million, while the secondary income deficit expanded to EUR 124.4 million from 115.3 million.

In 2025 as a whole, Slovakia’s current account deficit decreased to €4.95 billion, compared with €6.02 billion in 2024.

Slovakia Current Account Deficit Narrows
Slovakia’s current account deficit narrowed to EUR 166 million in March 2026 from EUR 340.7 million in the same month a year earlier. It marked the smallest gap since October 2025, mainly driven by a sharp increase in the goods account surplus, which rose to EUR 285.3 million from EUR 26.5 million a year earlier. Meanwhile, the services account surplus fell to EUR 14.4 million from EUR 26.4 million in March 2025. At the same time, the primary income deficit widened to EUR 335.7 million from EUR 330 million, while the secondary income shortfall more than doubled to EUR 130 million from EUR 63.6 million. For the first quarter of 2026, the country’s total current account deficit reached EUR 1,154 million.

Slovakia’s current account deficit narrowed to EUR 397.9 million in February 2026 from EUR 564.2 million in the corresponding month in the previous year. This marked the smallest deficit since October 2025. The goods account swung to a surplus of EUR 41.7 million from a shortfall of EUR 136.5 million, while the primary income deficit narrowed to EUR 334.1 million from EUR 339.9 million. However, the services account surplus fell to EUR 22.2 million from EUR 26.6 million and the secondary income gap widened to EUR 127.7 million from EUR 114.4 million. For the January-February period, the current account gap narrowed to EUR 1,129.2 million from EUR 1,234.0 million in the same period a year ago.
