Slovak current account deficit widened sharply to EUR 415.4 million in August 2017 from EUR 184.5 million in the same month of the previous year, as the goods account posted a EUR 207.6 million gap, compared with a surplus of EUR 22.2 million in August 2016. In addition, the primary income deficit rose to EUR 201.6 million from EUR 142.7 million a year earlier, while the secondary income gap fell to EUR 71.8 million from EUR 114.1 million. On the other hand, the services surplus increased to EUR 65.6 million from EUR 50.1 million in August last year. In January to August, the current account deficit widened to EUR 1,025 million from EUR 595 million in the same period of 2016.

Slovak consumer prices increased 1.6 percent year-on-year in September of 2017, above 1.5 percent in the previous month and matching market expectations. It is a new high since June 2013, as prices rose faster for food (5.3 percent vs 4.4 percent in August) and restaurants & hotels (2.6 percent vs 2.1 percent). Additional upward pressure came from: recreation & culture (1.8 percent, the same pace as in August); miscellaneous goods & services (2.3 percent vs 2.6 percent); transport (3.2 percent vs 3.5 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (1.9 percent vs 2 percent) and health (2.7 percent, the same pace as previous month). Conversely, cost declined further for housing & utilities (-1.2 percent vs -1.1 percent) and furnishings (-0.4 percent vs -0.1 percent). Annual core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, advanced 2.3 percent from 2.2 percent in August. On a monthly basis, both consumer and core consumer prices went up 0.2 percent.

Industrial production in Slovakia shrank 0.4 percent year-on-year in August of 2017, compared to a 9.2 percent jump in July and missing market expectations of 3 percent. Manufacturing activity contracted 0.6 percent ,after a 10.2 percent surge in July, mainly affected by decreases in production of transport equipment (-8.1 percent); computer, electronics and optical products (-4.2 percent); textiles, apparel and leather (-1 percent); coke and refined petroleum products (-2.5 percent) and food (-0.8 percent). Also, output continued to fall for mining and quarrying (-7.2 percent vs -6.1 percent) while slowed for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (1.9 percent vs 4.1 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial production went down 2.4 percent. Considering the first eight months of the year, industrial activity rose 4.5 percent.
