Slovakia's consumer price inflation edged down to 2.8 percent in August 2019 from a 15-month high of 2.9 percent in the previous month and slightly below market expectations of 2.9 percent. Miscellaneous goods & services prices rose at a softer pace (3.5 percent vs 3.6 percent) while inflation was unchanged for housing & utilities (at 3.8 percent), recreation & culture (at 1.8 percent) and furnishings, household equipment & maintenance (at 1.5 percent). In addition, transport costs continued to fall (-1.9 percent vs -1.5 percent), while food and non-alcoholic beverages prices rose further (5.2 percent vs 4.7 percent). The core inflation, which excludes volatile items, stood at 2.4 percent, also below forecasts of 2.5 percent. On a monthly basis, consumer prices advanced 0.2 percent and the core index rose 0.1 percent.

Slovakia's industrial production rose 2.8 percent year-on-year in July 2019, following a downwardly revised 1.9 percent fall in the previous month and beating market forecasts of a 0.5 percent gain. Manufacturing output increased 2.7 percent, rebounding from a 3.9 percent decline in June, namely pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical & botanical products (0.9 percent from -21.3 percent), rubber & plastic, and other non-metallic products (10.7 percent from -11.7 percent), and food, beverages & tobacco (11.4 percent from 7.2 percent). Also, mining production advanced further (14 percent from 10.9 percent). On the other hand, electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply output went up 1.4 percent, easing from a 15.1 percent rise in the prior month. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production increased 0.7 percent. Year-to-date, industrial production grew 4.6 percent over a year earlier.

Exports dropped 2.3 percent year-on-year to EUR 5,861 million while imports advanced 0.5 percent to EUR 5,971 million. Considering the January-July period, the trade surplus decreased to EUR 1,225 million from EUR 1,884 million in the corresponding period of 2018. Exports rose 2.6 percent to EUR 46.60 billion, driven by sales to the EU (0.4 percent) and non-EU countries (16.5 percent). Imports increased 4.3 percent to EUR 45.38 billion, boosted by purchases from the EU (6.0 percent) and those from non-EU countries (0.6 percent).

The real average wages in Slovakia increased 7.0 percent from a year earlier in the second quarter of 2019, accelerating from a 4.6 percent rise in the previous three-month period. It was the highest gain in wages since the third quarter of 2005. The average nominal monthly wage jumped 9.7 percent year-on-year to EUR 1,101. The highest level of the average monthly wage was registered in the sector of financial and insurance activities (EUR 2,070); information & communication (EUR 1,921); and in electricity, gas & steam supply (EUR 1,897); while the lowest was recorded in accommodation & food service activities (EUR 657); other service activities (EUR 701) and in construction (EUR 740).

Slovakia’s economy advanced 2.0% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2019, slowing from a 3.7% expansion in the previous period and higher than a preliminary estimates of 1.9%. On the production side, total industry output fell (-0.3% vs 4.1% in Q1), particularly manufacturing (-1.1% vs 4.2%) while public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities production advanced at a softer pace (6.5% vs 7.5%). On the other hand, wholesale and retail trade output increased faster (1.5% vs 0.5%). On the expenditure approach, gross fixed capital formation fell (-3.8% vs 2.1 %) while both household (1.9% vs 1.0%) and government consumption rose faster (4.2% vs 1.5%). Regarding net trade, exports dropped 1.9% (from 7.2% in Q1) while imports advanced 0.8% (from 6.4% in Q1). On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the economy grew 0.5%, easing from a 0.7% rise in the previous quarter but higher than a preliminary estimates of 0.4%.
