Retail sales in Portugal increased 2.4% year-on-year in August 2026, following a downwardly revised 2.6% rise in July.

a decline was seen in sales of food, drinks and tobacco (-0.3% vs 2.2%) while sales of non-food accelerated (4.2% vs 2.9%), led by household goods (10.1% vs 5.8%), clothing and footwear (5.9% vs 4.8%) and computers and telecommunication equipment (4% vs 0.5%).

Sales of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics remained robust (7.4% vs 7.8%) while those of fuels declined (-5.6% vs -1.3%).

Compared to the previous month, retail sales decreased 0.7%, extending a 0.1% fall in July.

Portugal Retail Sales Growth Hits Three-Month High
Portugal’s retail sales growth accelerated to 3.0% year-on-year in July 2026, the strongest pace in three months and up from a revised 2.7% in June. The rise was broad-based, led by food, beverages, and tobacco (2.5% vs. 1.3% in June) and non-food items (3.3% vs. 3.7%), including computers, telecom equipment, books, and other products (1.4% vs. 3.1%), textiles, clothing, footwear, and leather goods (4.5% vs. 7.1%), and household goods (8.2% vs. 7.6%). On a monthly basis, retail sales were flat, after a downwardly revised 1.4% increase in June.

Portugal Retail Sales Up 3% YoY
Retail sales in Portugal increased 3% year-on-year in June 2026, following a downwardly revised 2.8% gain in May. Strong increases were recorded for household goods (7.5% vs 10.8%); textiles, clothing and footwear (8.1% vs 11%); computers, telecommunication equipment and books (4.2% vs 0.9%); pharmaceutical products and cosmetics (5.2% vs 5.7%) and for online and mail sales (17.1% vs 10.3%). Excluding fuel, retail sales increased 3.8%, compared to a 4.4% gain in May. Compared to the previous month, retail sales jumped 1.7%, rebounding from a 0.2% fall in May.
