Mexico Retail Trade Growth Tops Forecasts

Retail sales in Mexico rose by 2.7% year-on-year in January 2025, marking the first increase after eight consecutive months of declines, and surpassing the forecasted 1.1% growth.

This was the strongest increase in retail activity since April 2024, mainly boosted by sales of textile products, costume jewelry, clothing accessories, and footwear (+15.3%).

Notably, sales through online channels, printed catalogs, television, and similar platforms surged by 19.1%.

On a monthly basis, retail trade rose by 0.6% on a seasonally adjusted basis, after a 0.1% increase in December and coming in line with market expectations.

Retail sales in Mexico rose 3.1% year-on-year in February 2026, easing from 5.0% in the prior month and marking the tenth consecutive month of expansion. The strongest gains were recorded in textiles, costume jewelry, accessories, and footwear (14.8%), stationery and personal use items (13.2%), and online and catalog sales (12.7%). Notable increases were also seen in healthcare products (9.9%) and household goods, computers, home décor, and used items (7.3%). In contrast, grocery spending fell 6.2%. On a monthly basis, retail sales dropped 0.9% following a 1% expansion in January.

Mexico Retail Sales Rise in January
Retail sales in Mexico rose 5.0% year-on-year in January 2026, accelerating from 4.3% in December and marking the ninth consecutive month of expansion. The strongest gains were recorded in online and catalog sales (23.9%), healthcare products (16.2%), stationery and other personal use items (11.9%), textiles, costume jewelry, clothing accessories and footwear (11.8%), household goods, computers, home décor and used items (6.4%), and motor vehicles, auto parts, fuels and lubricants (6.2%). In contrast, grocery spending fell 1.8%. On a monthly basis, retail sales rose 1.0% following a 0.1% decline in the prior month.

Mexico Retail Sales Rise in December
Retail sales in Mexico rose 4.3% year-on-year in December 2025, slightly below November’s 4.4% increase, marking the eighth consecutive month of expansion in the country’s retail activity. The strongest gains were seen in household goods, computers, home décor and used items (17.8%), online and catalog sales (11.3%), motor vehicles, auto parts, fuels and lubricants (9.1%), and healthcare products (8.2%). In contrast, spending on textiles, costume jewelry, clothing accessories and footwear fell 0.3%. On a monthly basis, retail sales edged down 0.1% after a 1% increase in November.
