Mauritius Inflation Rate Accelerates to 5-Month High

The annual inflation rate in Mauritius rose for the second month to 4.3% in May 2026 from 3.6% in April, marking the highest since last December.

Prices continued to climb for restaurants & hotels (11.5% vs 11% in April); transportation (9.6% vs 7.5%); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (9.3% vs 9.4%) and housing & utilities (8.1% vs 3.9%).

Conversely, decreases were seen for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-2% vs -2.3%) and information & communication (-1.7% vs 0%).

On a monthly basis, the CPI rose by 0.8%, following a 1.3% advance in the previous month.

The annual inflation rate in Mauritius fell to 3.7% in June 2026 from a five-month high of 4.3% in the prior month. Price growth moderated primarily for alcoholic beverages & tobacco (1.8% vs 9.3% in May); recreation & culture (2.3% vs 2.7%) and furnishings & household equipment (3.5% vs 3.9%). At the same time, prices continued to fall for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-1.3% vs -2%) and information & communication (-1.5% vs -1.7%). On a monthly basis, the CPI went up by 0.3% in June, slowing from a 0.8% increase in the month before.

The annual inflation rate in Mauritius accelerated to 3.6% in April 2026 from a one-year low of 2.7% in the prior month. Upward pressure came primarily from prices of restaurants & hotels (11% vs 9.2% in March); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (9.4% vs 9.1%); transportation (7.5% vs 4.8%); miscellaneous goods & services (5% vs 3.5%) and housing & utilities (3.9% vs 2.1%). Meanwhile, prices continued to fall for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-2.3% vs -2.9%). On a monthly basis, the CPI rose by 1.3%, the most since January 2025, after a 0.1% increase in the prior month.
