Mauritius Balance of Trade at -7339.00 MUR Million  
The trade deficit in Mauritius increased to MUR 7339 million in March of 2017 from a MUR 7064 million gap a year earlier. Exports went up 15.9 percent year-on-year to MUR 7858 million, mainly driven by a 25.9 percent rise in sales of food and live animals. In contrast, shipments of miscellaneous manufactured articles declined 12.4 percent. Exports rose to the US (62.2 percent) and France (2.4 percent), but fell to the UK (-1.9 percent). Imports went up 9.8 percent to MUR 15197 million, mainly boosted by a 73.9 percent jump in purchases of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials. India was the main import partner in March, with sales rising 17.8 percent.

It was the highest inflation rate since September 2014, as upward prices pressure came from most components: food (2.4 percent vs -3.0 percent in the prior month), alcoholic beverages & tobacco (12.3 percent vs 12.8 percent), clothing (2.5 percent vs 3.26 percent), health (5.6 percent vs 5.9 percent), transport (4.6 percent vs 3.4 percent), communication (0.2 percent vs 0.1 percent), recreation (-0.3 percent vs -2.7 percent), restaurants & hotels (4.4 percent from 4.1 percent) and miscellaneous (1.4 percent from 1.4 percent). In contrast, prices fell for: housing (-2.7 percent vs -3.52 percent); furnishing, household maintenance (-1.4 percent vs -0.5 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.8 percent, compared to a 1.0 percent gain in the prior month.
