Mauritius exports declined 12.4 percent year-on-year to MUR 6288 million in November of 2017 from MUR 7175 million, mainly food and live animals (-34.1 percent), miscellaneous manufactured articles (-7.9 percent), chemicals and related (-20.1 percent) and machinery and transport equipment (-13.4 percent). The most important export partners were: United Kingdom (13.9 percent); the US (10.6 percent); France (10.5 percent) and South Africa (9.3 percent).

Mauritius Interest Rate at 3.50 percent  
The central bank of Mauritius kept its key interest rate unchanged at 3.5 percent on November 29th. The Committee said the decision aims to continue to support economic growth, although it showed concerns about the effects of the introduction of the minimum wage policy and negative income tax on the labour market. The headline inflation remained steady at 3.5 percent in October and is expected to stay at the same level in 2017 and 2018. The economy expanded 4.1 percent year-on- year in the second quarter compared to 2.6 percent in the same period of 2016 and is projected to grow 3.8 percent in 2017 and 4.2 percent in 2018.

The number of foreigners visiting Mauritius increased 5.1 percent to 155 thousand in December of 2017 from 148 thousand in the same month a year ago. Biggest increases in arrivals were recorded from South Africa (up 6.3 percent to 20.8 thousand), the UK (21.3 percent to 15.1 thousand), Germany (39.3 percent to 11.5 thousand), India (14.8 percent to 9.5 thousand) and Switzerland (14.2 percent to 4.9 thousand. Meanwhile, declines were mostly seen from France (down 3.6 percent to 32.2 thousand), Reunion Island (-16.3 percent to 15.8 thousand), China (-26.0 percent to 2.6 thousand) and Austria (-3.7 percent to 2.1 thousand). Considering the January to December period, the number of foreigners visiting Mauritius went up 5.2 percent to 1341 thousand.

Consumer prices in Mauritius increased 4.2 percent year-on-year in December of 2017, accelerating from a 3.6 percent rise in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since August, as prices went up faster for: food (5.4 percent vs 3.4 percent in November); transport (5.7 percent vs 5.2 percent); clothing (2.8 percent vs 2.5 percent); furnishing (2.3 percent vs 1.7 percent); health (4.5 percent vs 4.4 percent); recreation & culture (2.3 percent vs 1.6 percent), and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (10.6 percent vs 10.4 percent) while prices of housing rebounded ( 1.4 percent vs -1.4 percent). Prices rose less for restaurant and hotels (2.2 percent from 3.1 percent in November); miscellaneous goods & services (1.8 percent vs 1.9 percent) while prices of communication were flat (from 0.1 percent). Meantime, inflation was steady for education ( 3.3 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.6 percent, after increasing 0.4 percent in the prior month.
