Meanwhile, declines were mostly seen from Reunion Island (down 10.7 percent to 14.7 thousand), China (-12 percent to 5.6 thousand), Switzerland (-0.6 percent to 1.6 thousand), Italy (-24.4 percent to 1.4 thousand) and Australia (-19.6 percent to 1.1 thousand). Considering the first five months of the year, the number of foreigners visiting Mauritius advanced 2.7 percent to 562.5 thousand.

Mauritius Interest Rate at 3.50 percent  
The Central Bank of Mauritius left its key interest rate steady at 3.5 percent on May 30th 2018, saying that the decision considered the risks to growth and inflation outlook. The annual inflation rate fell to 3.7 percent in April from 6.7 percent in March while the headline inflation rose to 5 percent in April from 4 percent in January, mostly due to adverse climatic conditions and it is expected to be around 4.2 percent in 2018 and 3.8 percent in 2019. The underlying measures of inflation have remained contained. Meantime, the GDP growth is projected to be at 4 percent in 2018 and 2019. The Committee noted that the short-term money market rates have been moving towards the key repo rate since January of 2018. Policymakers also mentioned the open market operations and the sterilized foreign exchange market intervention that the Central Bank of Mauritius has been conducing.
