Mauritius exports increased 1.4 percent year-on-year to MUR 7426 million in September of 2017 from MUR 7326 million a year earlier. Sales advanced mainly due to food and live animals (7.44 percent); beverages and tobacco (38.46 percent) and other commodities and transactions (16.32 percent). On the other hand, exports decreased for miscellaneous goods (-1.65 percent); machinery and transport equipment (-13.62 percent); manufactured goods (-5.43 percent) and chemicals (-30.64 percent). The most important export partners were: United Kingdom (12.6 percent), France (10.6 percent), USA (10.0 percent) and South Africa (9.8 percent).

Mauritius Inflation Rate at 3.50 percent  
Consumer prices in Mauritius increased 3.5 percent year-on-year in October of 2017, the same pace as in the previous month. It still remained the lowest inflation rate since April. Prices went up faster for: food (2.6 percent vs 1.5 percent in September); recreation & culture (2.1 percent vs 1.5 percent), and clothing (4.5 percent vs 2.5 percent) while prices of furnishing rose 1.8 percent, after being flat in September. Prices rose less for: health (4.3 percent vs 4.4 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (11.7 percent vs 12.2 percent), and restaurant and hotels (3 percent from 3.3 percent). Meantime, inflation was steady for education (3.3 percent). In contrast, prices fell for both housing (-2.4 percent vs 0.7 percent) and communication (-0.1 percent, after being flat in September). On a monthly basis, consumer prices declined 0.4 percent, after falling 0.9 percent in the prior month.

Mauritius' gross domestic product advanced 4.4 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2017, following a 3.5 percent growth in the previous period. It is the best performance since the last three months of 2015 as output rose faster for manufacturing (2.6 percent compared to 0.1 percent in Q1); financial and insurance activities (5.7 percent compared to 5.2 percent); accommodation and food service activities (7.3 percent compared to 2.5 percent) and information and communication (5.5 percent compared to 5.6 percent) and rebounded for agriculture, forestry and fishing (2.3 percent compared to -1.6 percent). Meantime output growth slowed for transportation and storage (3.5 percent compared to 4.7 percent) and mining (1.9 percent compared to 2.7 percent).
