Luxembourg Unemployment Rises to Highest Since 2020

Luxembourg’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate climbed to 6.5% in September 2026, its highest level since July 2020, compared with 6.4% in August and 6.1% a year earlier. The number of unemployed rose by 82 to 20,889, with the increase particularly pronounced among highly qualified job seekers at 10.6% year-on-year, although slowing from the 19% increase recorded in August. The most affected age group were those aged between 16 and 29, with unemployment rising by 10.7%, while those aged 45 to 64 were significantly less affected (7.6%). Total employment also rose by 130 to 322,936, while the labot force population rose by 212 to 323,825. Regarding cross-border employment, incoming cross-border workers rose by 513 to 236,204, while the number of outgoing resident workers rose by 29 to 15,581.

The number of unemployed persons increased by 464 over the month to 20,900, with the increase particularly pronounced among highly qualified job seekers (19%). By age group, the largest increase was among those aged 30 to 44 (13.9%), followed by those aged 16 to 29 (13.5%). Total employment also rose by 139 to 302,888, while the labor force population increased by 602 to 323,787. Regarding cross-border employment, the number of outgoing resident workers increased by 26 to 15,544, while the number of incoming cross-border workers rose by 227 to 235,753. In August 2025, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 5.9%.

Luxembourg’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 6.3% in July 2026, unchanged from the previous month. The number of unemployed persons decreased by 166 month-on-month to 20,399. Meanwhile, the total employment increased by 447 to 304,555, while the active labor force among Luxembourg nationals rose by 281 to 324,954. The number of resident job seekers grew by 966 to 532,403. Regarding cross-border employment, the number of outgoing resident workers increased by 27 to 15,347, while the number of incoming cross-border workers rose by 518 to 235,774. In July 2025, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 5.9%.
