Indonesia Imports Rise More than Estimated

Indonesia's imports surged 27.02% year-on-year to USD 26.09 billion in July 2026, exceeding expectations of 24.1% growth but slowing from a 34.27% increase in June, which was the strongest import growth since July 2022, amid higher oil prices.

Oil and gas imports soared 49.91% year-on-year to USD 3.77 billion, boosted by higher imports of oil products (49.11%) and crude oil (51.68%).

Non-oil and gas imports jumped 23.83% year-on-year to USD 22.33 billion, mainly supported by higher purchases of machinery and mechanical appliances and parts thereof (10.58%), electrical machinery and equipment and their parts (37.13%), and plastics and plastic products (19.96%).

Among trading partners, non-oil and gas imports were primarily sourced from China, with imports surging 23.49%, followed by the US (13.10%) and Japan (0.46%), while imports from the EU and ASEAN rose 26.32% and 4.88%, respectively.

For the first seven months of the year, imports advanced 19.94% to USD 163.33 billion.

Indonesia's imports jumped 34.27% year-on-year to a record high of USD 25.91 billion in June 2026, exceeding expectations of 25.3% and accelerating from a 22.16% increase in May. It marked the strongest import growth since July 2022, amid higher oil prices. Oil and gas imports soared 105.15% year-on-year to USD 4.56 billion, boosted by higher imports of oil products (73.37%) and crude oil (194.56%). Meanwhile, non-oil and gas imports jumped 25.05% year-on-year to USD 21.35 billion, mainly driven by higher purchases of machinery and mechanical appliances and parts thereof (19.60%), electrical machinery and equipment and their parts (46.39%), and plastics and plastic products (49.19%). Among trading partners, non-oil and gas imports were primarily sourced from China, with imports surging 38.78%, followed by Japan (6.66%), the US (99.38%), the EU (14.47%), and ASEAN (11.44%). For the first half of the year, imports increased 18.69% to USD 137.24 billion.

Indonesia Import Growth Beats Forecasts
Indonesia’s imports surged 22.16% yoy to USD 24.81 billion in May 2026, exceeding expectations of 19.5%, but easing slightly from a 22.49% rise in April, which was the fastest import growth since August 2022. The strong import growth was driven by government efforts to support domestic demand and higher oil prices. Oil and gas imports jumped 70.78% to USD 4.51 billion, driven by higher imports of oil products (99.49%). Meanwhile, non-oil and gas imports grew 14.89% year-on-year to USD 20.30 billion, mainly driven by higher purchases of machinery and mechanical appliances and parts thereof (13.44%), plastics and plastic products (39.78%), as well as iron and steel (25.86%). Among trading partners, non-oil and gas imports were primarily sourced from China, with imports surging 15.42%, followed by the US (2.61%), the EU (85.62%), and ASEAN (0.99%).
