Rupiah Faces Headwinds From Dollar Strength and MSCI Concerns

The Indonesian rupiah traded near IDR 18,040 per dollar on Monday, struggling to break below the 18,000 mark as a firm dollar weighed on the currency.

The dollar index remained supported by euro weakness amid violent protests in France and elsewhere in Europe, alongside escalating hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.

Sentiment was further hit by MSCI’s warning that Indonesia could be downgraded to standalone market status next year, raising worries over potential capital outflows.

Such a move could weaken the country’s access to global investment and place the economy alongside non-indexed markets such as Lebanon and Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia is set to hold its policy meeting later this week after keeping its key interest rate at 5.75% for three months through September, following a total of 100bp of hikes since May.

Meanwhile, cost pressures lingered, with September inflation quickening to 3.28% yoy, amid persistently high food prices, adding to the policy challenges.

Rupiah Advances as Dollar Eases, BI Rate Decision in Focus
The Indonesian rupiah extended gains, hovering near IDR 18,000 per dollar on Tuesday as the dollar index slipped and traders weighed the Fed’s policy outlook ahead of its October meeting. Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia intensified stabilisation efforts under President Prabowo’s directive, with Governor Destry Damayanti noting that swap instruments and domestic DNDFs had attracted about US$8–8.5 billion in inflows to date. The central bank began its two-day policy meeting, with markets expecting rates to remain unchanged for a fourth straight month following cumulative rate hikes of 100bp since May. Concerns over MSCI’s potential reclassification of Indonesia to standalone market status next year eased after regulators proposed excluding stocks with highly concentrated ownership from benchmarks to improve price discovery. However, overall sentiment stayed fragile as elevated oil prices threatened fiscal conditions and inflationary pressures persisted amid rising food costs linked to El Niño.

Rupiah Under Pressure on Potential MSCI Downgrade
The Indonesian rupiah slipped past IDR 18,050 per U.S. dollar on Friday, its weakest level since early August, after MSCI questioned Indonesia’s emerging-market status. The index provider flagged dysfunction in local stock markets and outlined a possible shift to standalone-market reclassification, which could trigger massive capital outflows. The prospect added pressure on the currency amid persistent volatility. Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia is set to hold a policy meeting next week after maintaining its benchmark interest rates at 5.75% for three straight months through September, following 100bp hikes in May and June, while continuing forex intervention to support the currency. September inflation accelerated to 3.28%, driven by persistent food price pressure. Globally, the dollar index eased but remained firm near 102, as resilient U.S. data reinforced expectations of further Fed tightening. For the week, the rupiah slipped around 0.4%, reversing gains in the previous two periods.
