The Indonesian rupiah edged up, hovering near IDR 17,890 per U.S.

Rupiah Stays Range-Bound as Dollar Strength, Inflation Risks Persist
The Indonesian rupiah hovered around IDR 17,900 per U.S. dollar on Tuesday, struggling to break out of its narrow range as the dollar index remained near an 18-month high ahead of key U.S. inflation reports. External risks also weighed on sentiment, with the IMF warning that geopolitical conflicts and energy supply disruptions pose challenges for oil-importing economies such as Indonesia. Locally, persistent food price pressures could keep inflation elevated through year-end, complicating Bank Indonesia’s efforts to support growth while stabilising the currency. Governor Destry Damayanti reaffirmed the central bank’s autonomy in setting interest rates despite closer coordination with the government, seeking to ease concerns over political interference. Meanwhile, forex reserves were nearly steady in September, staying near a five-month high. However, a persistent current account gap and tighter global financing conditions leave the rupiah exposed to shifts in foreign capital flows.

Rupiah Holds Range as Domestic and External Risks Persist
The Indonesian rupiah traded near IDR 17,900 per U.S. dollar on Monday, moving within a limited band as mixed domestic signals and external risks kept sentiment cautious. Retail sales posted their fastest growth in five months in August, but consumer confidence slipped from a recent high. Inflationary pressures also persisted after inflation hit a three-month high in September, with food costs likely to sustain upward pressure through year-end. Foreign exchange reserves eased a bit, but remained near a five-month high. However, Bank Indonesia faces a growing policy trade-off between supporting economic growth and safeguarding the currency. A persistent current account deficit and tighter global financing conditions leave the rupiah vulnerable to shifts in foreign capital flows. Globally, the dollar index remained firm ahead of U.S. inflation data, while renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia heightened geopolitical uncertainty and added to market caution.
