Rupiah Set to End Week Steady
The Indonesian rupiah firmed to around IDR 17,700 per U.S. dollar on Friday, reversing losses from the prior two sessions after an orderly protest in Jakarta Thursday passed without major security disruptions. Sentiment was also lifted by Bank Indonesia Acting Governor Destry Damayanti, who told parliament that closer policy coordination would not compromise the central bank’s independence. She added that monetary policy would remain focused on maintaining stability while supporting growth. For the week, the rupiah was on track to stabilise after losses in recent weeks, as investors looked ahead to key domestic data, including August inflation and July trade figures. Focus will also remain on the appointment of Bank Indonesia’s next governor, with parliament expected to decide after Destry, the sole nominee for the post, undergoes a fit-and-proper test. Globally, the dollar index held broadly steady ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the annual Jackson Hole meeting later today.

Rupiah Pressured by Firmer Dollar, Domestic Caution
The Indonesian rupiah extended its slide on Thursday, hovering near IDR 17,750 per U.S. dollar, as the dollar index held firm on stronger U.S. economic data, dimming hopes for near-term Federal Reserve easing. Meanwhile, domestic sentiment remained fragile amid ongoing major protests in Jakarta today, with investors wary of potential unrest reminiscent of last year’s turmoil. Caution also persisted ahead of next week’s August inflation data, with El Niño-related weather risks raising concerns about higher food prices, alongside July trade figures after June's print highlighted pressures stemming from global energy markets. Still, remarks from Destry Damayanti, the sole nominee for Bank Indonesia governor, offered some reassurance. She told parliament that closer policy coordination would not erode the central bank’s independence and stressed that its stance will remain centered on stability while supporting growth, reinforcing confidence in policy continuity.
