The Indonesian rupiah traded slightly below IDR 18,000 per U.S.

dollar on the first trading day of August, extending its winning streak to four straight sessions as the greenback eased further following Japan’s confirmed yen-buying intervention.

Locally, headline inflation eased to 2.88% in July, marking a three-month low and well within Bank Indonesia’s 1-1/2%–3-1/2% target and reinforcing expectations that price pressures remain contained.

Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia reiterated its commitment to stabilisation through a broad mix beyond rates, including spot FX intervention and onshore and offshore NDFs to manage liquidity and attract foreign inflows, complementing a total 100 bps of hikes since May.

However, strength was capped by external concerns following a persistent trade deficit in June, driven by surging imports.

Meantime, political uncertainty lingered as President Prabowo has yet to submit candidates for central bank governor following Perry Warjiyo’s abrupt exit.

Rupiah Set to Post Fifth Consecutive Monthly Loss
The Indonesian rupiah hovered near IDR 18,050 per U.S. dollar on Friday afternoon, holding steady from the prior session as traders looked ahead to busy domestic data releases next week, including July inflation, May trade figures, and Q2 GDP. The dollar itself remained soft, pressured by the Fed's cautious stance and suspected Japanese intervention to support the yen. Even so, the rupiah slipped about 0.5% on the week, extending prior weakness and leaving it on course for a fifth straight monthly drop. The currency remained under pressure amid uncertainty over the future monetary policy following Perry Warjiyo's sudden exit as central bank governor, despite Bank Indonesia's recent pledge to intensify rupiah stabilisation efforts through a broader policy mix beyond interest rates. Analysts caution that if President Prabowo's choice of successor leans more on political loyalty than technocratic credibility, fears of "fiscal dominance" could deepen, further eroding investor confidence.

Rupiah Edges Higher After BI Vows Stronger Currency Support
The Indonesian rupiah hovered near IDR 18,060 per U.S. dollar on Thursday, firming slightly after touching above IDR 18,100 the previous day, as the greenback weakened after the U.S. Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged while three voting members dissented in favor of a hike, underscoring divisions within the central bank. Locally, Bank Indonesia moved to calm markets following Governor Perry Warjiyo's sudden exit, pledging stronger stabilisation efforts. The central bank stressed its reliance on a broad policy mix beyond interest rates, including spot FX intervention, onshore and offshore non-deliverable forwards (NDFs), and issuance of BI rupiah-denominated securities, known as SRBI, to manage liquidity and attract foreign inflows. BI said these measures complement the total of 100bps rate hikes since May. Traders now turn to key domestic releases next week, including July inflation, May trade data, and Q2 GDP, for fresh signals on the economic outlook and the policy path.
