The Indonesian rupiah firmed to around IDR 17,900 per U.S.
dollar on Tuesday after approaching the 18,000 mark in the prior session, as traders positioned ahead of the central bank's policy meeting.
Markets widely expect Bank Indonesia to lift its key rate by 25bps to 6.0% Wednesday as policymakers begin a two-day policy meeting today.
Between May and June, the board raised borrowing costs by a cumulative 100bps to support the rupiah and financial stability.
Meantime, the government has intensified inflation-control efforts after June's reading touched the upper end of the central bank's target of 1-1/2% to 3-1/2%, including moves to stabilise food prices.
Gains were capped, however, by elevated oil prices that could add to fiscal strain.
On the trade front, May marked the first trade deficit in six years, reducing support from external balances.
Globally, the dollar index rose further as mounting U.S.–Iran tensions revived inflation concerns and reinforced views of policy tightening.
