The Indonesian rupiah hovered around IDR 16,850 per dollar on Tuesday afternoon, retreating after briefly touching IDR 16,800 in the prior session.
The move came even as the dollar index eased from a three-month high amid hopes for de-escalation in the Middle East conflict.
Domestic factors weighed on sentiment, with foreign exchange reserves falling to a three-month low in February.
On the data front, consumer confidence slipped in February after reaching a one-year high in January, reflecting rising cost pressures ahead of Eid al-Fitr.
Inflation accelerated to 4.76% in February, a near three-year high and above Bank Indonesia’s target, largely due to base effects.
Nevertheless, Governor Perry Warjiyo said inflation should remain manageable in 2026–2027, leaving room for further easing after 150bps of cuts since September 2024, while keeping currency stability a priority.
