The Indonesian rupiah hovered around IDR 16,900 per dollar on Thursday, little changed from the prior session after Bank Indonesia kept its key rate at 4.75% for a fourth straight meeting on Wednesday, in line with consensus.
Governor Perry Warjiyo pledged that policymakers would not hesitate to intervene “in large amounts” to support the currency, noting that foreign reserves hit a nine-month high in December 2025.
He voiced the bank’s commitment to guard rupiah stability and guide it toward gradual strengthening, helped by solid fundamentals.
However, Warjiyo signaled scope to resume rate cuts, with inflation projected to stay within the 1-1/2%–3-1/2% target range over the next two years.
Bank Indonesia has cut rates by 150bps between September 2024 and September 2025.
The governor viewed that the economy is still running below potential, keeping the 2026 growth outlook at 4.9%–5.7% versus 4.7%–5.5% for 2025.
Globally, the dollar index held gains as U.S.–Europe trade tensions eased.
