Finland Current Account Surplus Largest on Record

Finland's current account surplus widened to EUR 2,830 million in June 2026 from EUR 1,282 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. This marked the largest current account surplus on record, largely as the goods account surplus climbed sharply to EUR 2,797 million in June from EUR 1,063 million a year earlier. At the same time, the primary income surplus increased to EUR 903 million from EUR 744 million in June 2025. Meanwhile, a wider deficit was recorded in the services account, which expanded to EUR 693 million from EUR 369 million, while the secondary income shortfall also rose to EUR 178 million from EUR 155 million.

Finland’s current account recorded a deficit of EUR 562 million in May 2026, shifting from a surplus of EUR 367 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. The goods account surplus narrowed to EUR 328 million from EUR 678 million a year earlier, as exports rose 10% year-on-year to EUR 7. 1billion, while imports climbed 17% to EUR 6.7 billion. Additionally, the shortfall on the services account expanded to EUR 838 million from EUR 186 million, as well as the income redistribution to EUR 206 million from EUR 176 million. On the other hand, the primary income posted a surplus of EUR 154 million, nearly three times wider than EUR 52 million a year ago.

Finland’s current account posted a deficit of EUR 2,288 million in April 2026, the largest shortfall since March 2025 and sharply wider than the EUR 501 million deficit recorded a year earlier. The primary income account deficit widened significantly to EUR 1,942 million from EUR 354 million in April 2025, while the secondary income account deficit increased to EUR 225 million from EUR 191 million. The services account deficit also expanded to EUR 756 million from EUR 390 million a year earlier. In contrast, the goods account surplus improved to EUR 634 million from EUR 433 million in the corresponding month of 2025.
