Finland's gross domestic product increased by 1.84 percent year-on-year in November 2018, slowing from an upwardly revised 3.24 percent growth in the prior month. It was the weakest growth since July, as output expanded softer for both industry (1.21 percent vs 3.54 percent in October) and services (2.11 percent vs 3.47 percent). Meanwhile, output grew faster for agriculture, forestry and fishing (6.94 percent vs 3.10 percent).

Finland posted a current account surplus of EUR 174 million in November 2018, reversing from a gap of EUR 9 million in the same month a year earlier. The surplus of primary income surged to EUR 344 million from EUR 4 million a year ago. Also, the surplus of goods account increased markedly to EUR 152 million from EUR 124 million a year ago. Meanwhile, the services account showed a deficit of EUR 138 million, compared to a surplus of EUR 37 million; and the gap of secondary income widened to EUR 184 million from EUR 174 million in the previous year.

Meantime, prices rose faster for restaurants and hotels (3.1 percent vs 2.3 percent) while prices of miscellaneous goods & services were unchanged (the same as in the prior month). On the other hand, prices dropped for furnishings & household equipment (-0.7 percent vs 0.3 percent) while prices of recreation and culture continued to decline (-0.6 percent from -0.8 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged down 0.1 percent, after being flat in November.

The Finnish producer price inflation slowed to 4.7 percent year-on-year in November 2018 from 5.8 percent in the previous month. It is the lowest increase since April, as both producer prices for export products (4.6 percent vs 6.6 percent in October) and manufactured products sold on the domestic market (4.8 percent vs 5.0 percent) increased at a softer pace. Among sectors, the biggest upward pressure came from higher prices of oil products, pulp, paper, paperboard & cardboard, and electricity. On a monthly basis, producer prices went down by 0.3 percent, after increasing by 0.1 percent in October.

Net external demand contributed negatively to GDP growth, as exports fell 1.8 percent (vs -1.2 percent in Q2) while imports went up 0.5 percent (vs -0.2 percent). On a yearly basis, the economy advanced by 2.4 percent, following a downwardly revised 2.3 percent growth in the second quarter and above a preliminary reading of 2.2 percent.
