Denmark Retail Sales Growth Slows to 4-Month Low

Retail sales in Denmark grew by 3.7% year-on-year in August 2026, slowing from a 6.7% increase in the previous month and marking the weakest expansion since April.

Sales growth moderated across most categories, including supermarkets, department stores and specialized grocery stores (0.8% vs 4.1% in July), household equipment, furniture and building materials (7.5% vs 11.3%), cultural and leisure products (14.3% vs 17.2%), clothing, footwear and jewellery (7.8% vs 12.0%), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (5.6% vs 6.8%), and second-hand goods (10.0% vs 13.3%).

At the same time, turnover at liquid fuel filling stations declined faster (-16.9% vs -14.7%).

In contrast, revenue growth accelerated for consumer electronics (20.3% vs 17.3%).

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales dropped by 0.6% in August, marking the first decline in four months and reversing a downwardly revised 1.0% gain in the preceding period.

Retail sales in Denmark rose 6.7% year-on-year in July 2026, accelerating from a 4.6% increase in the previous month and marking the strongest growth since March 2026. Sales grew at a faster pace for consumer electronics (17.1% vs 16.5% in June), household equipment, furniture, and building materials (11.8% vs 9.3%), supermarkets, department stores, and specialized grocery stores (3.9% vs 1.6%), cultural and leisure products (16.7% vs 14.5%), and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (6.8% vs 4.8%). Moreover, sales declined at a slower pace for liquid fuel filling stations (-14.7% vs -17.1%). On the other hand, growth moderated for clothing, footwear, and jewelry (12.2% vs 12.6%) and second-hand goods (10.3% vs 12.0%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales increased 1.3%, accelerating from a revised 0.2% rise in the previous month.

Retail sales in Denmark rose 4.8% year-on-year in June 2026, accelerating from a downwardly revised 3.7% increase in the previous month and marking the strongest growth since March. Sales grew at a faster pace for consumer electronics (17.4% vs 5.7% in May), household equipment, furniture, and building materials (11.2% vs 4.9%), clothing, footwear, and jewelry (11.6% vs 8.1%), and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (4.9% vs 3.2%). Moreover, sales declined at a slower pace for liquid fuel filling stations (-17.2% vs -19.1%). On the other hand, growth moderated for supermarkets, department stores, and specialized grocery stores (1.6% vs 3.0%), cultural and leisure products (13.2% vs 17.6%), and second-hand goods (10.9% vs 13.2%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales increased 0.5%, easing from a 1.0% rise in May.
