Wheat futures climbed to about $5.39 per bushel, after fresh buying from Egypt signaled stronger near-term demand.
Egypt’s new state buyer Mostakbal Misr secured roughly half a million tons of Black Sea wheat for delivery in December and January.
The agency bought large volumes from Russia, Bulgaria and Ukraine and is already negotiating another similar-sized purchase from multiple origins.
As the world’s biggest wheat importer, Egypt’s buying is watched closely for signals on global demand and price competitiveness.
The USDA expects the country to import a record 13 million tons this season, and recent deals already total around 1 million tons.
Traders also grew more optimistic that the United States may resolve its government shutdown, which has limited access to key USDA reports.
Global fundamentals remain soft due to strong supply, solid harvest prospects in the southern hemisphere and steady winter planting in the north.
