Coal rose toward $110 per ton, approaching four-month highs, as reports indicated India is planning to expand coal-fired power capacity and build new plants through at least 2047.
The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of achieving energy independence and elevating India from a developing to a developed nation by that year.
Total coal-fired capacity could reach 420 gigawatts by 2047, an 87% increase from current levels.
China has similarly signaled continued reliance on coal power for decades, targeting peak demand by 2030 and reversing earlier plans for a faster phaseout.
The stance reflects ongoing dependence on coal across Asian economies and Europe amid volatile power supply and rising electricity demand from data centers.
Together, China and India account for more than 60% of global coal consumption.
