Argentina Monthly Inflation Eases in August

Argentina’s consumer price index rose 1.7% month-over-month in August 2026, easing from 2.1% in July, matching forecasts. Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels recorded the largest monthly increase at 2.8%, followed by education at 2.5%. Recreation and culture was unchanged, while clothing and footwear fell 0.6%. Food and non-alcoholic beverages made the largest contribution to monthly inflation across regions, driven by higher prices for vegetables, tubers, legumes, fruit, bread and cereals. Regulated prices rose 2.2%, led by increases in electricity, gas, public transportation and private healthcare costs. Seasonal prices fell 0.9%, as declines in tour packages and clothing were partly offset by higher prices for vegetables, tubers, legumes and fruit. Year-to-date inflation reached 21.3%. Core CPI increased 1.8%.

Seasonal prices increased 4.5%, led by vegetables, tour packages and accommodation services, while regulated prices rose 2.1%, reflecting higher public transportation fares, private healthcare costs and electricity prices. Recreation and Culture recorded the largest monthly increase at 5.0%, driven by higher tour packages and cultural services, followed by Restaurants and Hotels at 2.8%. Across Greater Buenos Aires, the Northeast, Northwest, Pampas and Patagonia, Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages made the largest contribution to monthly inflation, driven by higher vegetable, dairy, bread and cereal prices. Core CPI rose 1.8%, driven by higher housing rents and cultural services, partly offset by a decline in building maintenance fees following the removal of a 20% surcharge included in June.

Seasonal prices increased 3.4%, reflecting higher prices for vegetables and tourism services, including airfares, hotels, and package holidays, partly offset by lower fruit prices. Regulated prices advanced 2.3%, led by electricity and public transportation. The largest monthly increase was recorded in recreation and culture, which rose 4.2% due to higher package holiday prices, followed by housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, up 3.3%. Communications (0.9%) and clothing and footwear (0.4%) posted the smallest increases. Core inflation rose 1.6%, driven by higher prices for bread and cereals, pharmaceuticals, and housing rents. On an annual basis, consumer prices increased 33.5%.
