Swiss Non-Farm Payrolls Up 0.5% in Q1

Switzerland’s non–farm payrolls rose by 0.5% year-on-year to 5.537 million in Q1 2026, accelerating from a 0.2% gain in the previous quarter.

The increase was primarily driven by the services sector, rising 0.6% to 4.409 million, supported by higher employment in administrative and support service activities (2.5% vs 2.3%), public administration (1.7% vs 2.6%), and arts, entertainment and recreation (1.6% vs 1.1%).

Declines were seen in publishing, audiovisual and broadcasting activities (-5% vs -9.3%), telecommunications (-2.3% vs -4.9%), and finance and assurance (-1.5% vs -1.9%).

Meanwhile, employment in the industrial sector recovered by 0.1% to 1.129 million, after a 0.1% fall in Q4, driven by increases in mining and quarrying (3.3% vs 4.4%), electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (2.9% vs 3.6%), construction (1.3% vs 1.1%), which offset declines in manufacturing (-0.7% vs -1%) and water supply, waste management (-0.8% vs 1.9%).

Switzerland's non-farm payrolls rose 0.2% year-on-year to 5.544 million in Q4 2025, following a 0.1% gain in the previous quarter. Employment in the industrial sector fell at a slower pace of 0.1% to 1.129 million, compared with a 0.7% drop in Q3, supported by increases in manufacturing (-1% vs -1.4%), water supply and elimination of pollution (1.9% vs 1.8%), and construction (1.1% vs 0%), which offset the slowdown in mining and quarrying (4.4% vs 4.7%). Meanwhile, employment in the services sector remained unchanged at 0.2% to 4.415 million, amid rebounds in trade, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (0.4% vs -0.1%), real estate and housing (1.7% vs -3.1%), provision of other economic services (2.3% vs -1.1%), and arts, entertainment and recreation (1.1% vs -0.1%). Declines were seen in transport and storage (-0.7% vs 0.7%), hospitality (-0.9% vs 1.3%), and provision of financial and insurance services (-1.9% vs -1.6%).

Swiss Non-Farm Payrolls Growth Eases
Switzerland’s non-farm payrolls rose by 0.1% year-on-year to 5.532 million in the third quarter of 2025, easing from an upwardly revised 0.8% increase in the previous period. Employment in the industrial sector declined by 0.7% to 1.132 million, weighed down by a 1.4% drop in manufacturing. This was partly offset by gains in mining and quarrying (4.7%), electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (3.7%), and water supply and waste management (1.8%), while construction remained flat. Meanwhile, employment in the services sector inched up 0.2% to 4.4 million, supported by growth in health and social services (1.9%), freelance, knowledge and technical services (1.4%), and transport and storage (0.7%).
