Swiss Bond Yields Hold Near 2-Month Low

The Swiss 10-year government bond yield fell to around 0.45%, close to its lowest level in just over two months, while markets assess a Democratic takeover of the US congress, which could lead to political gridlock and raised the prospect of fiscal restraint in the US.

It could also affect President Trump’s foreign policy agenda, particularly his approach to the war with Iran, while expectations of tighter regulation of the AI buildout lifted safe-haven demand.

Further support came from SNB Chairman Schlegel’s remarks, which reinforced expectations that Swiss inflationary pressures remain contained and are largely driven by higher gasoline, diesel and heating oil prices since the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict.

Swiss inflation reached a near three-year high of 1.5% in October, also reflecting a weaker franc.

The SNB kept its policy rate unchanged at 0%.

While markets anticipate a hike in early 2027, economists expect the first increase only in late 2027.

Swiss Bond Yields Fall Toward 2-Month Low
The Swiss 10-year sovereign yield fell below 0.5%, reaching its lowest level in just over two months, while markets assess a Democratic takeover of the US congress, which could lead to political gridlock and raised the prospect of fiscal restraint in the US. It could also affect President Trump’s foreign policy agenda, particularly his approach to the war with Iran. However, signs of persistent inflationary pressures limited gains. In Switzerland, inflation climbed to a nearly three-year high of 1.5% in October, driven by a weaker franc and higher energy prices. While still within the SNB’s 0%-2% target range, inflation moved closer to its upper limit. The SNB kept its policy rate at 0%, with Chair Schlegel signalling no immediate need for a change. While markets expect a hike in early 2027, economists anticipate a move only in late 2027 as core inflation remained steady at 0.5%.

Swiss Bond Yields Stay Near 7-Week Low
The Swiss 10-year sovereign yield held near 0.5%, remaining close to a seven-week low, as stronger-than-expected inflation pressured yields. Swiss inflation climbed to a nearly three-year high of 1.5% in October, driven by a weaker franc and higher energy prices, although its share in the Swiss inflation basket is small compared with its European peers. While still within the SNB’s 0%-2% target range, inflation moved closer to its upper limit. The SNB kept its policy rate at 0%, with Chair Schlegel signalling no immediate need for a change. However, rising inflation has strengthened market expectations of a rate hike in early 2027, although most economists anticipate a move only in late 2027 as core inflation remained steady at 0.5%. High oil prices are also fuelling expectations of monetary tightening elsewhere, adding pressure to Swiss yields. In contrast, safe-haven demand amid Europe’s uncertain fiscal outlook is providing some support.
