Sri Lanka Producer Inflation Eases Slightly in August

Producer prices in Sri Lanka rose 5.2% year-on-year in August 2026, slowing from an upwardly revised 5.4% increase in July.

Agriculture prices increased 2.6%, rebounding from 0.1% growth, driven by stronger prices for non-perennial crops (9.6% vs 3.5%) and animal production (17.3% vs 14.8%), while prices for perennial crops remained in decline (-7.8% vs -8.8%).

Manufacturing prices rose 5.1%, easing slightly from 5.6%, as higher prices for coke and refined petroleum products (63.3% vs 56.7%) were partly offset by slower growth in rubber and plastics products (13.1% vs 15.1%).

Meanwhile, inflation in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply eased (23.9% vs 27.0%), while water collection, treatment and supply edged up (5.4% vs 5.3%).

On a monthly basis, producer prices increased 0.5%, easing from a 0.7 rise in the previous month.

Producer prices in Sri Lanka rose 5.0% year-on-year in July 2026 from a revised 4.1% in the previous month and reaching the highest level since May 2023. Prices in agriculture rebounded to 0.1% from a 10.7% fall in June, particularly for growing of non-perennial crops (3.5% vs -8.2%), and animal production (14.8% vs 10.4%). Prices also increased for manufacturing (5.3% vs 4.2%), driven by coke and refined petroleum products, which surged 51.5% from 3.5% in June, while rubber and plastics products rose 16.6% from 6%. In contrast, inflation eased for electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply (23% vs 29.4%), and water collection, treatment and supply (5.5% vs 6.1%). On a monthly basis, producer prices edged up 0.5% in July, rebounding from a 1.2% drop in June.

Sri Lanka Producer Inflation Slows in June
Producer prices in Sri Lanka rose by 1.3% year-on-year in June 2026, easing from an upwardly revised 3.3% rise in the previous month. Agricultural producer prices fell at a faster pace (-10.7% vs -9.5% in May), mainly due to weaker prices for perennial and non-perennial crops. Meanwhile, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply prices accelerated (15.8% vs 13.4%), while water collection, treatment and supply also recorded faster growth (5.9% vs 5.7%). Manufacturing inflation increased further (3.6% vs 3.2%), supported by higher costs of chemical products, non-metallic mineral products, other transport equipment, and food products. On a monthly basis, producer prices declined 1.2% in June, reversing a 1.6% increase in the previous month.
