Employment increased at a softer pace in July, due to the difficulties in replacing unskilled employees to account for high labour turnover especially in the food & beverages, and textiles & apparel sectors. Additionally, new orders slowed from the previous month and the suppliers’ delivery time lengthened due to scarcity of raw materials in the world market and unfavourable weather conditions. On the other hand, production and stock of purchases advanced faster. Finally, expectations regarding output for the next three months improved.

Sri Lanka Producer Prices Change at 6.30 percent  
Producer prices in Sri Lanka increased 6.3 percent year-on-year in June of 2018, easing from an upwardly revised 6.5 percent rise in the previous month. It was the lowest producer inflation since October of 2016, as cost fell for agriculture (-0.2 percent from 0.5 percent) and electricity & water supply (-0.5 percent from 2 percent). Meanwhile, prices advanced faster for manufacturing (10.6 percent from 10.3 percent in May), namely coke, refined petroleum & nuclear fuel (39.7 percent), publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media (10.3 percent) and chemicals & chemical products (9.2 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices went up 1.3 percent, following a 0.8 percent gain in May.

Visitors from Europe accounted for 44 percent of all tourists visiting Sri Lanka and Asia Pacific accounted for 42 percent of the total. Biggest increases in arrivals were recorded from the US (47.5 percent to 7,164); Australia (27.9 percent to 8,801); Netherlands (11.3 percent to 13,342); India (7 percent to 31,032); the UK (6.9 percent to 25,186). Considering January to July visitor increased by 13.7 percent year-on-year to 1.382 million.
