Sri Lanka's producer price inflation slowed to a five-month low of 3.1 percent year-on-year in March 2019 from a revised 4.7 percent in the previous month, as cost rose at a softer pace for both manufacturing (9.3 percent vs 11.9 percent in February) and utilities (3.6 percent vs 6.9 percent) while agriculture prices continued to fall (-8.3 percent vs -8.2 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices surged 1.3 percent, following two consecutive months of decline.

The number of tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka declined 7.5 percent year-on-year to 166,975 in April of 2019, with almost 90 percent of tourists traveling by air. Visitors from Europe accounted for 52 percent of all tourist arrivals and those from the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 38 percent. Among major sources of tourist traffic to Sri Lanka, the number of visitors dropped the most from the UK (-5.2 percent to 24,718), India (-21.5 percent to 23,431), China (-18.3 percent to 14,263) and Australia (-31.8 percent to 9,565). In contrast, increases in the number of arrivals were recorded from Germany (56.7 percent to 16,930) and France (23.4 percent to 9,148). In the first four months of the year, the number of tourist arrivals rose 2.2 percent to 907,575.

Meantime, food prices fell less (-0.9 percent vs -1.4 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.3 percent, rebounding from a 0.2 percent drop in March.

The economy of Sri Lanka advanced 1.8 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2018, slowing from an upwardly revised 3.5 percent expansion the prior period. It was the weakest growth rate since the first quarter of 2014, as the industrial sector shrank (-3.6% vs 3.1% in Q3) namely construction (-10.1% vs 4.9%), machinery & equipment (-1.9% vs 1.1%), mining & quarrying (-14.9% vs -1.1%), production of paper, printing and reproduction of media (-11.7% vs -5.1%), and chemicals & pharmaceutical products (-9.4% vs -2.7%). Meantime, services activities grew 4.3 percent, the same pace as in the previous quarter, mostly driven by transportation (3.3% vs 1.3%), financial services (12.6% vs 11.5%), insurance (22.4% vs 5.1%) and education (5% vs 1.3%). Also, agriculture, forestry & fishing increased 4.5 percent, higher than a 4 percent expansion in the third quarter. Considering full 2018, the economy grew 3.2 percent, easing from a 3.4 percent expansion in 2017.
