The Services Sector PMI in Sri Lanka rose to 56.9 in May 2018 from 53.2 in the previous month. There was a strong upturn in new business and business activities, mainly in financial services, telecommunication, transportation of goods and warehouse sectors. Also, employment recovered in May due to an accelerated pace of recruitments, along with a decline in backlogs of work. In addition, the labour cost went up amid expected salary hikes for the year 2018. On the price front, output cost inflation accelerated due to upward revisions to transport charges and revisions to the tax structure. Nevertheless, optimism on the three-month business outlook strengthened slightly.

The Manufacturing PMI in Sri Lanka went up to 60.6 in May 2018 from 45.5 in the previous month. The reading pointed to a recovery in factory activity amid a surge in production aiming to fulfill new orders from May and orders received in the April after the New Year holidays dragged manufacturing activities down. Textile, wearing apparel and leather were among the main contributors to the rise in production. Also, there was an increase in stock of purchases and employment. Meanwhile, the suppliers’ delivery time lengthened due to adverse weather conditions. Still, expectations regarding output for the next three months improved.

The Sri Lanka economy grew by 3.2 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018, easing from an upwardly revised 3.5 percent in the preceding period, as the output slowed considerably for industrial activities (1 percent compared to 4.1 percent in Q4) and agriculture (4.8 percent compared to 7.1 percent). On the other hand, services sector output advanced 4.4 percent, compared to 3.2 percent in the last quarter of 2017.

Producer prices in Sri Lanka increased 5.2 percent year-on-year in April of 2018, following a downwardly revised 9 percent rise in the previous month. It was the lowest producer inflation since October 2016, as cost advanced at a softer pace for manufacturing (5.2 percent from 8.8 percent in March), mostly due to coke, refined petroleum & nuclear fuel (13.2 percent from 55.4 percent); and agriculture (6.1 percent from 10.3 percent), namely due to a decline in cost of eggs, growing of cereals and vegetables. In addition, prices fell for electricity & water supply (-3.5 percent from 0.2 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices went down 1.2 percent from a 1.2 percent gain in March.
