The Services Sector PMI in Sri Lanka rose to 57.4 in November 2017 from 55.3 in October. The increase was boosted mostly by business activity, new businesses and employment. Business activity advanced mainly in financial services and telecommunication sectors, led by a rise in service delivery channels and technology-based improvements. The employment sector hit a four-month high as companies increased staff levels for the festival season and recruitment for previously opened positions. On the other hand, expectations regarding activity in the next three months, backlogs of work and prices charged slowed.

The Sri Lanka economy advanced 3.3 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2017, down from 4.0 percent in the preceding period, as the output slowed considerably for industrial activities (1.9 percent compared to 5.2 percent). Also, agriculture shrank further and the most since 2010 (-3.3 percent compared to -2.9 percent) after a severe drought and heavy rainfalls prevailed during the last 18 months in many districts of the country. In contrast, growth remained solid for services sector (4.3 percent compared to 4.5 percent).

On a monthly basis, manufacturing production rose 0.8 percent.

In contrast, the inflation went up for food and non-alcoholic beverages (13.8 percent from 12.6 percent) and restaurants and hotels (14.3 percent from 10.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 1.2 percent, following a 0.9 percent rise in the previous month.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka held its benchmark interest rate at 7.25 percent on November 7th, 2017, saying the decision is consistent with the objective of maintaining inflation at mid-single digit levels over the medium term and thereby facilitating a sustainable growth trajectory. Also, the central bank held its standing lending facility rate at 8.75 percent.
