Sri Lanka Tourist Arrivals at 195582.00  
The number of visitors from abroad to Sri Lanka jumped 16.8 percent year-on-year to 195,582 in November 2018, following a 0.5 percent rise in the previous month. It was the highest growth rate since June, as tourist arrivals from India, the Sri Lanka’s largest source market of tourist surged 21.4 percent to 32,243 persons. Also, other increases were seen from the UK (61.1 pct to 13,634), Germany (89.6 pct to 9,891), Australia (51.9 pct to 6,779), Russia (2.9 pct to 7,864), France (22.4 pct to 5,575), the US (24.9 pct to 4,643), and Switzerland (85.7 pct to 1,901). Meanwhile, tourist arrivals from China fell 1.8 percent to 19,237 persons and that from Maldives dropped 9.1 percent to 8.165. Visitors from Europe accounted for 43 percent of all tourists visiting Sri Lanka and Asia Pacific accounted for 47 percent of the total. Considering January to November number of visitors increased by 11.2 percent year-on-year to 2.081 million.

Inflation rate in Sri Lanka went up to 3.3 percent year-on-year in November 2018, from an upwardly revised 3.2 percent in the previous month. Prices advanced faster for furnishing equipment (3.9 percent from 3.6 percent in October) and health (12.2 percent from 8.9 percent); and declined less for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-1.0 percent from -2.3 percent). Meantime, inflation was steady for housing & utilities (at 1.4 percent, the same as in the prior month) and clothing & footwear (at 7.2 percent); while cost slowed for transport (14.3 percent from 14.9 percent) and restaurants & hotels (7.2 percent from 11.3 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 1.3 percent, following a 0.2 drop in October.

Sri Lanka Services PMI at 55.50  
The services sector PMI in Sri Lanka rose to 55.5 in October 2018 from 53 in the previous month. There was a strong expansion in business activities (57.1 from 51 in September), mainly in transportation, warehousing and financial services; and new business (58.2 from 55.2), particularly for financial and professional services. This in turn, led to a faster rate of job creation (55.4 from 54.2), while backlogs of work went down (43.1 from 45). Moreover, the optimism on the three-month business outlook strengthened at a faster pace (63.6 from 59.6), due to the upcoming festival season and tourism’ peak season, while concerns went up over the political situation and depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee. Also, on the price front, output cost inflation accelerated.

The Manufacturing PMI in Sri Lanka went up to 58.2 in October 2018 from 54.1 in the previous month, as higher seasonal demand led to an improvement in new orders (59 from 53 in September) and production (61 from 53.5), mainly in manufacturing of food & beverages. Additionally, stock of purchases widened (61 from 56), amid an increase in production of furniture. On the other hand, employment growth slowed (55.0 from 55.5) in October, mainly in manufacturing of textiles, wearing apparels, leather; and the suppliers’ delivery time lengthened at the same pace as in the prior month, due to a shortage of raw materials and the expectation the rupee will stabilize. In terms of inflation, input costs continued to rise due to the rupee depreciation.

Sri Lanka Producer Prices Change at 2.20 percent  
Producer prices in Sri Lanka increased 2.2 percent year-on-year in September 2018, following a downwardly revised 6.0 percent rise in the previous month. It was the lowest producer inflation since September 2016, as prices slowed for manufacturing (11 percent from 13.2 percent), mostly due to food products & beverages (-1.1 percent); and dropped further for agriculture (-12.8 percent from -5.5 percent in August), namely due to a decline in cost of vegetables (-18 percent); cereals (-16 percent) and fruits & nuts (-13.1 percent). Contrarily, prices advanced faster for electricity & water supply (2.6 percent from 1.3 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices went down 2.3 percent, following a 1.9 percent drop in September.

Sri Lanka Interest Rate at 8.00 percent  
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka raised its benchmark interest rate by 75 bps to 8 percent on 14th November 2018 meeting, in the wake of a tumbling rupee. It was the first rate adjustment since February 2017, amid political uncertainty triggered by President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to dissolve parliament. Policymakers said inflation is expected to remain at low single digit levels this year and is projected to be maintained in the targeted range of 4-6 percent during 2019 and thereafter with proper policy adjustments. The economic growth is likely to remain subdued and below the estimated level this year, amid a slowdown in exports, moderation in tourism related inflows and workers remittances. In order to promote a sustainable boost in economic growth, it is required a clear and transparent framework while implementing structural reforms. The standing lending facility rate was raised by 50 bps to 9 percent.

The Sri Lanka economy grew by 3.7% YoY in the second quarter of 2018, up from an upwardly revised 3.5% gain in the preceding period. It was the highest growth rate since Q4 2016, as the output expanded faster for industrial activities (2.3% from 1% in Q1), mostly for manufacturing (+3.2%) – due to higher production of food, beverages & tobacco; textiles & wearing apparels and coke & refined oil products -; construction (+1.4%) and electricity, gas, steam & air supply (+2.3%). Additionally, services sector output advanced 4.8%, compared to 4.4% in Q1 2018, mainly as a result of a solid performance of wholesale & retail trade (+4.9%); accommodation, food & beverage services (+6.4%); telecommunication services (+14.4%); information technology services (+9%) and financial services (+12%). On the other hand, output went up at a softer pace for agriculture (4.5% from 4.8%), as production slowed for tea (7.1%) and rubber (11.9%) and fell for marine fishing (-0.5%).
