Sri Lanka Producer Prices Change at 6.60 percent  
Producer prices in Sri Lanka increased 6.6 percent year-on-year in August 2018, following an upwardly revised 7.7 percent rise in the previous month. It was the lowest producer inflation since October 2016, as prices dropped further for agriculture (-5.5 percent from -1.2 percent in July), namely due to a decline in cost of cereals (-11.5 percent), fruits (-6.7 percent) and vegetables (-2.3 percent). Contrarily, prices advanced faster for electricity & water supply (0.8 percent from 0.4 percent) and manufacturing (14 percent from 13.5 percent), mostly due to coke, refined petroleum & nuclear fuel (41.8 percent); publishing, printing & reproduction of recorded media (12.4 percent); wearing apparel, dressing & dyeing of fur (12.1 percent) and chemicals & chemical products (12 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices went down 1.4 percent, following a downwardly revised 1.3 percent drop in July.

The services sector PMI in Sri Lanka fell to 53 in September 2018 from 57 in the previous month. The reading pointed to the weakest pace of expansion on record in the services sector, as business activity went up at a much softer pace (51 from 63.7 in August), mainly in accommodation, food & beverage and wholesale & retail trade, amid the end of the tourism season and lower imports volume. Additionally, new business growth eased from the preceding month (55.2 from 60), particularly for financial services and insurance sectors. Also, job creation slowed in September (54.2 from 55.8), while backlogs of work picked up (45 from 42.8). Moreover, expectations on the three-month business outlook improved at a slower pace (59.6 from 62.8). Also, on the price front, output cost inflation accelerated due to upward revisions to fuel prices and currency depreciation.

The reading pointed to the weakest expansion in factory activity since April, amid slower increases in production (53.5 from 60.5) and new orders (53 from 60.5), namely in manufacturing of food and beverages. Additionally, employment (55.5 from 56.5) and stock of purchases (56 from 57) went up at a softer pace; and the suppliers’ delivery time widened in September (54 from 53), as manufacturers expect the rupee to stabilize. In terms of inflation, both input and output price inflation increased, as input costs continued to rise due to the rupee depreciation.

The number of visitors from abroad to Sri Lanka increased 2.8 percent year-on-year to 149,087 in September of 2018, following a 4.9 percent rise in the previous month. It was the weakest growth rate since November 2017, as tourist arrivals from India, the Sri Lanka's largest source market of tourist fell 6.3 percent. Other decreases were also seen from Maldives (-15 percent), and France (-6.9 percent). Visitors from Europe accounted for 43 percent of all tourists visiting Sri Lanka and Asia Pacific accounted for 47 percent of the total. Biggest increases in arrivals were recorded from Australia (38.6 percent to 8,665); the US (37.5 percent to 3,793); the UK (13 percent to 14,007); Germany (12.8 percent to 9,659). Considering January to September visitor increased by 11.6 percent year-on-year to 1.732 million.

Sri Lanka Interest Rate at 7.25 percent  
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 7.25 percent at its October 2018 meeting, mentioning the aim of stabilizing inflation at mid-single digit levels in the medium term to support growth. In the second quarter of the year, the economy expanded 3.7 percent year-on-year, led by positive momentum from services and agriculture sectors, while industry remained moderate. During the remaining quarters of the year, the economy is expected to grow at a rate higher than in the first half of 2018 supported by exports and investment. The annual inflation rate fell to 4.3 percent in September from 5.9 percent in August, mainly due to lower food prices and with appropriate policy adjustments it is projected remain within the 4 - 6 percent target range over the medium term. The standing lending facility rate was also kept at 8.50 percent.

The Sri Lanka economy grew by 3.7% YoY in the second quarter of 2018, up from an upwardly revised 3.5% gain in the preceding period. It was the highest growth rate since Q4 2016, as the output expanded faster for industrial activities (2.3% from 1% in Q1), mostly for manufacturing (+3.2%) – due to higher production of food, beverages & tobacco; textiles & wearing apparels and coke & refined oil products -; construction (+1.4%) and electricity, gas, steam & air supply (+2.3%). Additionally, services sector output advanced 4.8%, compared to 4.4% in Q1 2018, mainly as a result of a solid performance of wholesale & retail trade (+4.9%); accommodation, food & beverage services (+6.4%); telecommunication services (+14.4%); information technology services (+9%) and financial services (+12%). On the other hand, output went up at a softer pace for agriculture (4.5% from 4.8%), as production slowed for tea (7.1%) and rubber (11.9%) and fell for marine fishing (-0.5%).
