Sri Lanka Interest Rate at 7.25 percent  
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka maintained its benchmark interest rate at 7.25 percent on June 23rd, 2017. Policymakers said that the decision is consistent with the objective of maintaining inflation at mid-single digit levels over the medium term and thereby facilitating a sustainable growth trajectory. Annual inflation rate is projected to moderate to mid-single digits by the end of 2017, and stabilize thereafter. The central bank also maintained its lending facility rate at 8.75 percent.

Sri Lanka GDP Annual Growth Rate at 3.80 percent  
Sri Lanka's economy advanced 3.8 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, easing from a 5.3 percent expansion in the previous period. It is the weakest expansion since the second quarter of 2016, as growth slowed for services (3.5 percent vs 4.6 percent in Q4) and industry (6.3 percent vs 9.2 percent). Also, agriculture continued to contract (-3.2 percent vs -8.4 percent) as severe drought condition prevailed in four provinces. On the positive note, output surged in: construction (16.1 percent), water collection, treatment and supply (21.6 percent), manufacturing of other non-metallic and mineral production (19.5 percent), manufacturing of machinery and equipment (18.2 percent), and mining and quarrying (17.9 percent) reinforcing the growth of industry sector.

Producer prices in Sri Lanka increased 19.8 percent year-on-year in April of 2017, following an upwardly revised 19.1 percent rise in the previous period. It is the highest producer inflation since the series began in 2015, as prices jumped for agriculture (39 percent vs 38.1 percent in March) and manufacturing (8.5 percent vs 7.9 percent). In contrast, cost fell further for electricity and water supply (-3.2 percent vs -1.8 percent). On a monthly basis, prices went up 1.7 percent.

In contrast, increases in the number of arrivals were recorded from: Belgium (45.1 percent to 547); Netherlands (37 percent to 1,997); Japan (27.5 percent to 2,848) and Thailand (51.2 percent to 1,223). In the first five months of the year, the number of tourist arrivals rose 4.8 percent to 887,093.

In contrast, cost accelerated for food and non-alcoholic beverages (9.3 percent from 8.6 percent); transport (3.9 percent from 3.6 percent) and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (26.4 percent from 25.9 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.9 percent.
