Slovenia Retail Sales Highest in 5 Months

Slovenia’s retail sales climbed 5.7% year-on-year in August 2026, picking up from a downwardly revised 4.9% gain in the previous month. It marked the strongest annual growth since March, as sales of non-food items advanced to 5.3% from 4.7% in July, while automotive fuel sales in specialized stores soared to 19.4% from 14.3%. On the other hand, sales of food items contracted by 0.4%, following a 0.6% gain. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales rose 1.0%, easing from a downwardly revised 1.4% increase in the previous month. In the first eight months of the year, retail turnover grew 2.7% from a year earlier, as higher sales of automotive fuel in specialized stores (9.1%) and non-food products (3.0%) offset the drop in food, beverages and tobacco (-0.7%).

It marked the strongest annual growth since March, as sales of non-food items jumped to 5.7% from 3.4% in June, while automotive fuel sales in specialized stores soared to 14.7% from 2.7%. On the other hand, sales of food items eased notably to 0.1% from 7.2%. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales rose 1.6%, rebounding from an upwardly revised 0.6% decline in the previous month and marking the strongest monthly increase since March. In the first seven months of the year, retail turnover increased 2.3% from a year earlier, as higher sales of non-food products (2.0%) and automotive fuel in specialized stores (7.6%) offset the decline in food, beverages and tobacco (-0.8%).

Slovenia's retail sales rose 2.1% year-on-year in June 2026, easing slightly from an upwardly revised 2.2% increase in the previous month and marking the weakest growth since February. The slowdown was driven by a 1.8% increase in retail sale of automotive fuel in specialised stores. Meanwhile, food climbed 1.6, while non-food retail sales grew 1.5%. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales fell 0.2% in June, reversing an upwardly revised 0.1% gain in May. In the first half of 2026, retail turnover was 1.9% from the same period a year earlier, supported by a 6.4% jump in motor fuel sales and a 2.5% rise in non-food retail sales. By contrast, food retail sales declined 0.9%, underscoring continued softness in consumer demand for food products.
