Slovenia Swings to Trade Deficit in August

Slovenia recorded a trade deficit of EUR 1,380.5 million in August 2026, shifting from a surplus of EUR 107.8 million in the same month a year earlier.

Imports jumped 36.0% year-on-year to EUR 6,466.6 million, lifted by higher purchases from both EU (+10.8%) and non-EU countries (+57.1%).

Meanwhile, exports rose by 4.9% to EUR 5,086.1 million, driven largely by increased shipments to EU markets (+16.8%), while non-EU countries (-3.6%) recorded declines.

For the January–August period, Slovenia recorded a trade deficit of EUR 7,129.1 million, shifting from a surplus of EUR 1,970.4 million in the same period of the previous year, weighed down by a 5.1% fall in exports, compared with a 13.8% increase in imports.

Slovenia Trade Gap Widens to Nearly 2-Year High
Slovenia recorded a trade deficit of EUR 1,580.3 million in July 2026, shifting from a surplus of EUR 479.1 million in the same month a year earlier. This marked the largest shortfall since October 2024, as import growth far outpaced exports. Imports surged 49.1% year-on-year to EUR 8,297.5 million, driven largely by increased purchases from both EU (+5.4%) and non-EU countries (+94.0%). Meanwhile, exports rose 11.3% to EUR 6,717.2 million, lifted by higher shipments to both EU (+8.6%) and non-EU markets (+13.6%). For the January–July period, Slovenia recorded a trade deficit of EUR 5,693.2 million, shifting from a surplus of EUR 3,681.6 million in the same period of the previous year, weighed down by a 6.2% drop in exports, compared with an 11.2% increase in imports.

Slovenia Trade Deficit Shrinks in June
Slovenia's trade deficit narrowed sharply to EUR 217.3 million in June 2026 from EUR 1,411.4 million in the same month a year earlier, as export growth outpaced imports. Imports fell 4.2% year-on-year to EUR 6,546.3 million, weighed down by a 12.3% decline in purchases from non-EU countries, while imports from EU members increased 8.2%. Meanwhile, exports rose 17% to EUR 6,329.1 million, supported by stronger shipments to both non-EU markets (21.6%) and EU countries (12.3%). Despite the marked improvement in June, Slovenia's trade deficit widened to EUR 4,119.9 million in the first half of 2026, as exports fell 9.1% from the corresponding period of 2025 while imports increased 5.3%.
