Slovenia Trade Deficit Shrinks in June

Slovenia's trade deficit narrowed sharply to EUR 217.3 million in June 2026 from EUR 1,411.4 million in the same month a year earlier, as export growth outpaced imports. Imports fell 4.2% year-on-year to EUR 6,546.3 million, weighed down by a 12.3% decline in purchases from non-EU countries, while imports from EU members increased 8.2%. Meanwhile, exports rose 17% to EUR 6,329.1 million, supported by stronger shipments to both non-EU markets (21.6%) and EU countries (12.3%). Despite the marked improvement in June, Slovenia's trade deficit widened to EUR 4,119.9 million in the first half of 2026, as exports fell 9.1% from the corresponding period of 2025 while imports increased 5.3%.

Slovenia recorded a trade deficit of EUR 1,154.1 million in May 2026, widening sharply from a EUR 4.1 million deficit a year earlier, as trade with non-EU countries surged. Imports rose 38.6% year-on-year to EUR 7,520.7 million, driven by a 67.8% jump in purchases from non-EU countries, while imports from EU members increased 8.9%. Exports grew 17.6% to EUR 6,366.6 million, supported by a 28.2% increase in shipments to non-EU markets, compared with 6.3% growth to EU countries. In the first five months of 2026, Slovenia's trade balance swung to a EUR 3,920.9 million deficit from a EUR 2,447.7 million surplus in the same period last year, as exports fell 13.7% while imports increased 7.2%.

Slovenia posted a trade surplus of EUR 201.5 million in April 2026, shifting from a deficit of EUR 392.8 million in the same month a year earlier, as exports rose while imports declined. Exports increased 2.6% year-on-year to EUR 5,981.4 million, driven by higher shipments to both EU (3.8%) and non-EU countries (1.6%). Meanwhile, imports fell 7.1% to EUR 5,779.8 million, mainly due to a sharp decline in imports from non-EU countries (-19.9%), while imports from EU countries rose (9.4%). In the first four months of the year, the country’s trade balance swung to a deficit of EUR 2,749.4 million from a surplus of EUR 2,799.0 million a year ago, as exports plunged 20.1%, while imports edged up 0.1%.
