Slovakia posted a trade deficit of EUR 125 million in August 2026, shifting from a surplus of EUR 2.3 million in the corresponding month of the previous year.
This marked the first deficit after six consecutive months of trade surpluses, as imports outpaced exports.
Imports rose 7% to EUR 8,414 million, driven mainly by an increase in mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, alongside higher purchases of machinery and transport equipment.
Imports from EU member states increased by more than 11%, while those from non-EU countries edged up 0.1%.
Meanwhile, exports grew 5.4% to EUR 8,289.1 million, supported by increase in manufactured goods classified chiefly by material and a rise in mineral fuels and related materials.
Exports to the EU rose by more than 8%, while shipments to non-EU countries fell 6%.
Over the January–August 2026 period, Slovakia's trade surplus stood at EUR 1,538.1 million, from EUR 1,460.7 million in the same period of 2025.
