Romania Current Account Deficit Widens to Record High

Romania’s current account deficit widened sharply to EUR 3.14 billion in July 2026 from EUR 2.15 billion in the same month a year earlier.

This marked the largest deficit on record, as the goods account deficit increased to EUR 2.80 billion from EUR 2.68 billion, while the primary income deficit expanded to EUR 1.20 billion from EUR 1.0 billion.

Moreover, the secondary income account recorded a deficit of EUR 0.12 billion, shifting from a surplus of EUR 0.54 billion a year earlier.

In contrast, the services account surplus inched up to EUR 0.99 billion from EUR 0.98 billion.

For the January–July period, the current account deficit totaled EUR 16.29 billion, up from EUR 15.71 billion in the same period last year.

Romania’s current account deficit widened to EUR 2.96 billion in June 2026 from EUR 1.48 billion in the same month a year earlier, marking the largest deficit since December 2025. The primary income deficit rose sharply to EUR 1.08 billion from EUR 0.25 billion in June 2025, while the goods deficit increased to EUR 3.10 billion from EUR 2.51 billion. Meanwhile, the services surplus narrowed to EUR 1.06 billion from EUR 1.02 billion, while the secondary income surplus decreased to EUR 0.17 billion from EUR 0.26 billion. For the January-July period, the current account deficit totaled EUR 14.20 billion, up from EUR 13.56 billion in the same period last year.

Romania Current Account Deficit Shrinks in May
Romania's current account deficit narrowed to EUR 2.71 billion in May 2026 from EUR 2.97 billion in the same month a year earlier. The improvement was driven by a 3.6% reduction in the goods deficit to EUR 2.58 billion, alongside a 3.6% increase in the services surplus to EUR 1.01 billion. The primary income deficit also narrowed slightly to EUR 1.24 billion from EUR 1.26 billion. Meanwhile, the secondary income account swung to a EUR 76 million surplus from a EUR 32 million deficit a year earlier. In the first five months of 2026, Romania's current account deficit narrowed to EUR 11.4 billion, compared with EUR 12.1 billion in the corresponding period of 2025.
