Romania Current Account Deficit at 6-Month High

Romania’s current account deficit widened to EUR 2.96 billion in June 2026 from EUR 1.48 billion in the same month a year earlier, marking the largest deficit since December 2025. The primary income deficit rose sharply to EUR 1.08 billion from EUR 0.25 billion in June 2025, while the goods deficit increased to EUR 3.10 billion from EUR 2.51 billion. Meanwhile, the services surplus narrowed to EUR 1.06 billion from EUR 1.02 billion, while the secondary income surplus decreased to EUR 0.17 billion from EUR 0.26 billion. For the January-July period, the current account deficit totaled EUR 14.20 billion, up from EUR 13.56 billion in the same period last year.

Romania's current account deficit narrowed to EUR 2.71 billion in May 2026 from EUR 2.97 billion in the same month a year earlier. The improvement was driven by a 3.6% reduction in the goods deficit to EUR 2.58 billion, alongside a 3.6% increase in the services surplus to EUR 1.01 billion. The primary income deficit also narrowed slightly to EUR 1.24 billion from EUR 1.26 billion. Meanwhile, the secondary income account swung to a EUR 76 million surplus from a EUR 32 million deficit a year earlier. In the first five months of 2026, Romania's current account deficit narrowed to EUR 11.4 billion, compared with EUR 12.1 billion in the corresponding period of 2025.

Romania’s current account deficit narrowed to EUR 2,684 million in April 2026 from EUR 2,947 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. This marked the largest shortfall in four months, as the goods account deficit decreased to EUR 2,755 million from EUR 2,763 million, while the services account surplus expanded to EUR 1,170 million from EUR 995 million. Additionally, the primary account shortfall shrank to EUR 951 million from EUR 1,040 million. On the other hand, the secondary income deficit widened to EUR 148 million from EUR 140 million. Over the first four months of the year, Romania’s current account deficit narrowed to EUR 7,981 million, compared to a deficit of EUR 9,101 million in the same period a year earlier.
