Romania Current Account Deficit Widens in November

Romania's current account deficit widened to EUR 2.687 billion in November 2024 from EUR 1.713 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year.

The goods and services gap increased to EUR 1.839 billion from EUR 1.295 billion a year earlier, and the primary income shortfall went up to EUR 0.846 billion from EUR 0.540 billion.

Moreover, the secondary income account recorded a small deficit, switching from a EUR 0.121 billion deficit a year earlier.

Romania Current Account Gap Lowest Since 2023
Romania’s current account recorded a deficit of EUR 977 million in January 2026, down from EUR 1,032 million in the same month a year earlier. This marked the smallest monthly trade gap since January 2023, supported by a strong rise in the secondary income surplus, which jumped to EUR 188 million from EUR 5 million in January 2025. At the same time, the goods deficit narrowed to EUR 2,305 million from EUR 2,719 million. In contrast, the services surplus decreased to EUR 1,164 million from EUR 1,176 million, and the primary income balance shifted to a deficit of EUR 25 million from a surplus of EUR 505 million.

Romania Current Account Gap Highest in 5 Months
Romania’s current account posted a deficit of EUR 2,622 million in December 2025, narrowing from EUR 2,793 million in the same month of the previous year. This marked the smallest monthly deficit since July, driven by a wider surplus for services account, which expanded to EUR 883 million from EUR 754 million a year ago. Additionally, the goods account shortfall declined to EUR 2,705 million from EUR 3,328 million. On the other hand, the primary income deficit rose to EUR 887 million from EUR 440 million, while the secondary income surplus contracted to EUR 87 million from EUR 221 million. For the full year of 2025, the country’s current account deficit reached EUR 30,127 million, higher than EUR 28,853 million in 2024.

Romania Current Account Deficit Widens
Romania's current account deficit widened to EUR 2,465 million in November 2025, from EUR 2,416 million in the same month of the previous year. The primary income deficit increased to EUR 705 million from EUR 513 million in November 2024, while the secondary income shortfall widened to EUR 170 million from EUR 102 million. In addition, the services account surplus narrowed significantly to EUR 762 million, compared with EUR 1,079 million a year earlier. On the other hand, the goods account deficit narrowed to EUR 1,591 million in November 2025, from EUR 1,802 million a year earlier. Considering the first eleven months of the year, Romania’s current account deficit widened to EUR 27,140 million, compared with EUR 26,059 million in the same period of the previous year.
