The U.S.
tariff rate on Malaysian goods will be announced Friday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Thursday after a call with President Donald Trump.
A lower rate of 15% to 20% is expected, following Malaysia’s reported concessions on several key issues.
These include accepting U.S.
halal certification for certain products—such as pharmaceuticals—allowing them to bypass approval from Malaysia’s Islamic Development Department.
The agreement also involves Malaysia supplying rare earth elements to the U.S., a move seen as strategically important.
Malaysia holds over 16 million tonnes of rare earth deposits valued at approximately MYR 1 trillion, but currently exports them to China due to lacking domestic processing capabilities.
