Retail sales in Indonesia shrank by 0.3% year-on-year in April 2025, reversing from a 5.5% growth in March—the highest in seven months—and marking the first annual decline since April 2024.

The drop was driven by sharper contractions in sales of information and communication equipment (-25.1% vs -12.9% in March) and household appliances (-10.5% vs -5.7%).

Clothing sales also decreased (-5.4%), indicating the first fall in three months.

Meanwhile, sales growth slowed for automotive parts and accessories (8.7% vs 9.5%), food, beverages, and tobacco (1.2% vs 6.8%), and cultural and recreational goods (3.6% vs 9.2%).

Simultaneously, fuel sales accelerated (8.3% vs 3.3%), the fastest pace in five months.

On a monthly basis, retail sales dropped 5.1%, reversing March’s 13.6% surge—the strongest monthly gain in nearly three years.
