Rupiah Firms Ahead of BI Rate Call

The Indonesian rupiah extended gains for a second day, hovering around IDR 17,900 per U.S.

dollar on Wednesday despite broad dollar strength, as markets awaited Bank Indonesia’s policy decision.

The central bank is widely expected to lift its key interest rate by 25bps to 6.0% after a cumulative 100bps of tightening in May–June to shore up the currency.

In the meantime, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi stressed Indonesia’s fiscal resilience, citing a stable sovereign outlook and manageable deficit, while authorities intensified inflation-control efforts after June’s reading hit the upper end of Bank Indonesia’s 1-1/2%–3-1/2% target, including food price stabilisation.

However, rupiah gains were tempered by concerns over higher crude costs straining the budget of the net oil-importing nation.

Investor sentiment also remained fragile, underscored by Indonesia’s slide to the bottom of the ASEAN-6 in the 2026 World Competitiveness Ranking and heavy foreign capital outflows earlier this year.

Rupiah Strengthens on BI Rate Hike Bets
The Indonesian rupiah firmed to around IDR 17,900 per U.S. dollar on Tuesday after approaching the 18,000 mark in the prior session, as traders positioned ahead of the central bank's policy meeting. Markets widely expect Bank Indonesia to lift its key rate by 25bps to 6.0% Wednesday as policymakers begin a two-day policy meeting today. Between May and June, the board raised borrowing costs by a cumulative 100bps to support the rupiah and financial stability. Meantime, the government has intensified inflation-control efforts after June's reading touched the upper end of the central bank's target of 1-1/2% to 3-1/2%, including moves to stabilise food prices. Gains were capped, however, by elevated oil prices that could add to fiscal strain. On the trade front, May marked the first trade deficit in six years, reducing support from external balances. Globally, the dollar index rose further as mounting U.S.–Iran tensions revived inflation concerns and reinforced views of policy tightening.

Rupiah Slips on Dollar Gains, Fiscal Worries
The Indonesian rupiah edged lower to around IDR 17,960 per U.S. dollar on Monday, ending a four-day advance as the greenback firmed on renewed Middle East tensions that lifted oil prices and stoked fears of sticky U.S. inflation and prolonged higher interest rates. Locally, rising crude oil prices and reports of fuel shortages in Sumatra added to concerns over Indonesia’s fiscal strain, even as budget execution in H1 of 2026 remained broadly on track. Still, losses were cushioned by government steps to rein in inflation after June readings neared the top of Bank Indonesia’s target band of 1-1/2% and 3-1/2%, including food price stabilisation amid El Niño risks. Meanwhile, investment momentum strengthened, with foreign direct inflows posting the sharpest rise since late 2024 in Q2, underscoring resilience in attracting long-term capital despite global uncertainty. Markets now look to Bank Indonesia’s policy meeting later this week after a cumulative 100bp of hikes in May and June.
