The Indonesian rupiah slipped to around 16,430 per USD, its weakest level since early August, amid mounting public anger over lawmakers’ new perks.
At the center of the controversy is a housing allowance of IDR 50 million per month for members of parliament, roughly ten times Jakarta’s minimum wage.
The uproar has intensified amid rising property taxes imposed by regional governments, following President Prabowo Subianto’s draft 2026 budget that shifts more fiscal responsibility to local authorities while reducing central funding.
Local media reported that police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse protesters, underscoring growing discontent.
The unrest comes as households already face high food prices and sluggish job growth.
Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia pledged to stay active in the FX market, intervening in spot, forward, and bond markets to stabilize the local currency.
Globally, the US dollar steadied as traders awaited the PCE inflation data for clues on Fed policy.
