Czech Republic Producer Prices Change at 2.30 percent  
Producer prices in Czech Republic rose 2.3 year-on-year in May of 2017, easing from a 3.2 percent increase in April and below market expectations of 2.9 percent gain. It was the lowest producer inflation since January, as prices rose at a slower pace for both mining and quarrying (4.3 percent from 6.4 percent in April) and manufactured products (2.8 percent from 4 percent), mainly basic metals and fabricated metal products (7.6 percent from 7.9 percent) and machinery and equipment (1.4 percent from 1.5 percent) while cost of transport equipment continued to fall (-1.7 percent from -1.1 percent). In contrast, prices went down for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning (-1.3 percent from -1.4 percent). On a monthly basis, producer prices fell by 0.5 percent.

Czech consumer prices increased 2.4 percent year-on-year in May 2017, following a 2.0 percent gain in the previous month and below market expectations of 2.2 percent rise. Cost rose at a faster pace for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.5 percent from 3.6 percent in March), recreation and culture (1.1 percent from 0.9 percent), housing and utilities (1.7 percent from 0.9 percent). Cost of alcoholic beverages rebounded (1.3 percent from -0.1 percent) while transport rose at a slower (4.1 percent from 5.5 percent). In contrast furnishings and household equipment fell (-0.2 percent after flat reading in the prior month). On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged up 0.2 percent, after were flat in March and above market expectations was flat reading.

Construction output in Czech Republic increased 4 percent year-on-year in April of 2017, following an upwardly revised 7.1 percent rise in the previous month. It was the second straight month of increase in construction output, driven by building activity (10.6 percent vs 7.5 percent in March) while civil engineering work fell (-10 percent vs 5.9 percent). It was important to note that April 2017 had three shorter working days than April 2016. On a monthly basis, construction output increased 1.6 percent.

Industrial production in Czech Republic declined 2.5 percent year-on-year in April of 2017, following a downwardly revised 10.2 percent jump in March and worse than market expectations of a 1.8 percent fall. Output was affected by three fewer working days related to Easter holiday, with stronger effects in manufacturing (-3.4 percent), namely the production of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (-4.8 percent), repair and installation of machinery and equipment (-24.3 percent)m and metal products (-6.7 percent). Also, mining and quarrying dropped (-0.2 percent). In contrast, utilities expanded (1.1 percent). On a monthly basis, industrial output went up 0.6 percent.

The Czech economy advanced 1.3 percent on quarter in the first quarter of 2017, following a 0.4 percent expansion in the previous period and in line with preliminary estimates. It was the strongest growth rate since the second quarter of 2015, mainly led by government spending (1.4 percent from -0.3 percent in Q4 of 2016) and investments (3.6 percent from -1.7 percent). Meanwhile, consumer spending slowed (0.5 percent from 0.7 percent). Net external demand contributed less positively, as imports (5.3 percent from 0.3 percent) rose at the faster pace than exports (4.8 percent from 2.1 percent). Year-on-year, the economy advanced 2.9 percent after growing by 1.9 percent in the previous period, matching preliminary estimates.
