Dutch wholesale gas prices stayed above €28 per megawatt-hour, near their highest level in about a month, as robust wind power output reduced demand from gas-fired plants.
Despite this, the benchmark front-month Dutch contract is on track to close 2025 roughly 40% lower, reflecting weaker European gas demand and increased LNG imports, particularly from the US, which is expected to hit record exports to Europe this year.
Meanwhile, Europe continues to phase out Russian gas.
On December 17, the European Parliament approved the EU’s plan to end Russian gas imports by late 2027, clearing the penultimate legal hurdle before the ban becomes law.
