European natural gas prices climbed above €28 per megawatt-hour, the highest level in about a month, as colder weather boosted heating demand across the region.
Much of Europe remains under the influence of Arctic air, which is expected to persist into next week, supporting consumption, even though a milder weather pattern may emerge from mid-January.
In northwest Europe, average temperatures are forecast to rise slightly from around 1.6°C to 2.5°C, but will still remain below seasonal norms.
At the same time, EU gas storage sites were last reported to be 63.7% full, compared with 74% at the same point last year.
Despite near-term strength, prices remain far below earlier peaks and are down about 45% on the year due to ample supply from Norway and record US LNG exports.
The US is set to export around 14.9 billion cubic feet per day of LNG this year, up 25% from 2024 levels, according to the EIA’s latest Short-Term Energy Outlook.
