Bulgaria Current Account Deficit Widens in March

Bulgaria’s current account deficit widened to EUR 1,610 million in March 2026 from EUR 929.6 million in the corresponding month a year earlier.

The goods account deficit increased to EUR 1,203.3 million from EUR 839.4 million in March 2025, and the primary income deficit also expanded to EUR 985.4 million from EUR 761.4 million a year ago.

At the same time, the services surplus narrowed to EUR 586.9 million from EUR 675.5 million in the same month last year.

Conversely, the secondary income surplus increased to EUR 177.6 million from EUR 84.3 million, partially offsetting the broader deterioration in the current account position.

Bulgaria Current Account Deficit Widens in February
Bulgaria’s current account deficit widened markedly to EUR 170.1 million in February 2026 from EUR 77.4 million a year earlier. The goods account gap increased significantly to EUR 657.5 million, compared with EUR 371.7 million in February 2025. On the other hand, the services surplus rose to EUR 609.7 million from EUR 560.5 million. In addition, the shortfall in net primary income, reflecting income from labour, capital, land, and taxes on production and imports as well as subsidies, narrowed notably to EUR 177.4 million from EUR 306.3 million, while the secondary income surplus, reflecting the redistribution of income, increased to EUR 70.5 million from EUR 14.9 million.

Bulgaria Current Account Deficit Widens in January
Bulgaria’s current account deficit widened sharply to EUR 729.4 million in January 2026 from EUR 29.3 million in the same month a year earlier. The goods account deficit widened to EUR -879.4 million from EUR -869.2 million. At the same time, the services surplus narrowed to EUR 575.5 million from EUR 602.4 million, while the primary income balance, which reflects the receipt and payment of income related to the use of resources, such as labour, capital, land, taxes of production and imports and subsidies, shifted to a deficit of EUR 514.6 million, compared with a surplus of EUR 242.1 million a year earlier. In contrast, the secondary income account recorded a surplus of EUR 89.1 million, reversing a deficit of EUR 4.5 million.
