The goods shortfall increased by EUR 121.9 million to EUR 343 million; the services surplus decreased by EUR 81.2 million to EUR 37.2 million and the secondary income surplus shrank by EUR 282.7 million to EUR 44.7 million. In contrast, the primary income balance shifted to EUR 7.5 million surplus from a EUR 93.7 million shortfall. Considering the first three months of the year, the current account surplus shortened by EUR 158.8 million to EUR 59.9 million.

The Bulgaria GDP expanded 0.8 percent on quarter in the first three months of 2017, compared to a 0.9 percent growth in the previous period, as imports rose faster than exports, preliminary estimates showed. Exports increased 2.2 percent (from 0.5 percent in Q4) and imports went up at a faster 5.3 percent (from 1.7 percent in Q4). Final consumption continued to grow (1.7 percent vs 1.3 percent in Q4) and gross fixed capital formation decreased less (-1.3 percent vs -1.8 percent in Q4). Year-on-year, the Bulgarian economy advanced 3.4 percent, the same as in the previous period.

Bulgaria's gross domestic product advanced 3.4 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, compared to a 3.4 percent growth in the previous quarter, preliminary estimates showed. Final consumption increased (4.1 percent from 0.8 percent in Q4). Meantime, exports continued to rise (7.2 percent from 6.8 percent in Q4) but imports went up faster (10.6 percent from 5.5 percent in Q4). In contrast, gross fixed capital formation declined further (-5.4 percent from -4.5 percent in Q4). On a quarterly basis, the economy grew 0.8 percent compared to a 0.9 percent expansion in the December quarter.

It is the strongest expansion since May of 2014, as manufacturing surged (9.9 percent vs 5.2 percent in February), mainly led by basic metals (52.7 percent vs 30.2 percent), computer, electronic and optical products (40.6 percent vs 27.1 percent) and rubber and plastics (15.3 percent vs 7.9 percent). Meanwhile, output slowed for mining and quarrying (3.7 percent vs 14.9 percent) and tumbled for electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (-6.1 percent vs 2.1 percent). On a seasonally adjusted basis, industrial output went up 0.8 percent from an upwardly revised 3.9 percent increase in February.

Sales advanced faster for: computers, peripheral units and software, telecommunications equipment (20.5 percent vs 10.8 percent in February); dispensing chemist (12.1 percent vs 11.1 percent); other cultural and recreation goods (14.9 percent vs 5.5 percent); textiles, clothing and leather products (17.9 percent vs 8.6 percent); food, beverages and tobacco (7.3 percent vs 6.5 percent), audio and video equipment, hardware and similar (9.6 percent vs 0.8 percent). Also, sales rebounded for automotive fuel (12.5 percent vs -9.3 percent). In contrast, those via mail order houses or via Internet slowed significantly (10.4 percent vs 26.2 percent). On a monthly basis, retail trade went up 0.8 percent from an upwardly revised 0.9 percent increase in February.
