Bulgaria’s inflation rate went up to 2.6 percent in May of 2018 from 2 percent in the previous month. It was the highest inflation since December 2017, as prices advanced faster for food & non-alcoholic beverages (2.1 percent from 1.2 percent in April); housing & utilities (4 percent from 3.8 percent) and transport (4.2 percent from 0.8 percent). On the other hand, cost slowed for restaurant & hotels (3.8 percent from 4.1 percent); recreation & culture (4.3 percent from 5 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (3.7 percent from 3.8 percent); communication (2 percent from 2.2 percent); furniture & household equipment (1.6 percent from 1.7 percent); clothing & footwear (-1.3 percent from -1.2 percent) and education (3.2 percent from 3.3 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.3 percent, easing from 0.4 percent in April.

Bulgaria retail trade increased 5.0 percent year-on-year in April 2018, following an upwardly revised 2.4 percent rise in the previous month. It was the sharpest gain in retail sales since April last year, driven by sales of food, beverages and tobacco (7.0 percent vs 7.6 percent in March) and non-food products (4.1 percent vs -1.0 percent). Within the latest category, main gains were registered in sales of: audio & video equipment; hardware, paints & glass, electrical household appliances (4.9 percent vs 4.6 percent); computers, peripheral units & software, telecommunications equipment (3.1 percent vs -9.3 percent); information & communication equipment (3.9 percent vs -2.5 percent) and automotive fuel (0.8 percent vs -9.6 percent). Also, sales via mail order houses or via Internet advanced faster (16.4 percent vs 9.0 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade went up 0.9 percent, the same pace as in the previous month.

Bulgaria’s economy advanced 3.6 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018, above the preliminary estimate of a 3.5 percent expansion and following a 3.5 percent growth in the previous period. Gross fixed capital formation expanded faster (7 percent from 4.5 percent in Q4 2017) while a slowdown was seen in consumption (3.3 percent from 3.8 percent). Also, exports (4.4 percent from 2 percent) went up faster while imports (4.6 percent from 8.3 percent) rose at a softer pace. On a quarterly basis, the economy expanded 0.9 percent, up from a 0.7 percent growth in the fourth quarter of 2017.
