Bulgaria Inflation Rate at 3.60 percent  
The annual inflation rate in Bulgaria rose to 3.6 percent in September of 2018 from 3.5 percent in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since February 2013, as prices went up faster mostly for food & non-alcoholic beverages (3.2 percent vs 2.9 percent in August) and recreation & culture (3.9 percent vs 2.5 percent). Additional upward pressure came from cost of: alcoholic beverages & tobacco (3.6 percent vs 3.5 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (2.5 percent vs 2.4 percent) and furniture & household equipment (2.2 percent vs 1.7 percent). On the other hand, cost slowed for housing & utilities (4.6 percent vs 4.8 percent); transport (8.4 percent vs 9 percent) and restaurants & hotels (5.1 percent vs 6 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.3 percent, after a 0.1 percent gain in the preceding month.

Industrial production in Bulgaria increased 2.3 percent year-on-year in August of 2018, up from a downwardly revised 0.9 percent gain in the previous month. Output advanced at a faster pace for manufacturing (5.0 percent vs 2.0 percent in July), mainly boosted by gains in repair and installation of machinery and equipment (32.3 percent vs -10.4 percent); and in the production of electrical equipment (26.1 percent vs 7.4 percent) and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (23.1 percent vs 16.9 percent). In contrast, production continued to fall for mining & quarrying (-17.4 percent vs -8.8 percent) and electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply (-2.2 percent vs -4.9 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production increased 0.8 percent, recovering from a 1.2 percent decline in July.

Bulgaria's retail sales surged 5.1 percent year-on-year in August of 2018, following a 4.9 percent increase in the previous month. Sales rose solidly for food,beverages & tobacco (9.0 percent vs 9.6 percent in July) and non-food products (3.4 percent vs 2.5 percent), of which dispensing chemist (11.8 percent vs 14.0 percent); audio and video equipment; hardware, paints and glass, electrical household appliances (6.5 percent vs 4.3 percent) and electronic products (3.1 percent vs -0.8 percent). Meanwhile, sales fell further for automotive fuel (-1.0 percent vs -0.7 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade went up 0.5 percent, up from a 0.2 percent increase in July.

The number of visitors from the EU went up 5.3 percent and accounted for 62.3 percent of total. Tourist arrivals increased mostly from Germany (+4.4 percent), Romania (+13.9 percent), France (+19.3 percent) while declines were recorded from Poland (-10.9 percent), Italy (-6.3 percent) and Austria (-5.9 percent).

Bulgaria’s economy advanced 3.4 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2018, unrevised from the preliminary estimate and compared to a 3.6 percent expansion in the first three months of 2018. It was the lowest growth rate since the second quarter of 2015. Output slowed for gross fixed investment (4.6 percent from 7 percent in Q1); and net trade contributed negatively to growth, as exports went up 1.7 percent (4.4 percent in Q1) and imports increased at a higher 4.3 percent (4.6 percent in Q1). On the other hand, household consumption advanced at a faster 5.4 percent, compared to a 3.4 percent increase and output rebounded for government expenditure (0.9 percent from -1.4 percent). On a quarterly basis, the gross domestic product went up 0.8 percent, easing from a 0.9 percent growth in the first quarter and the same as the preliminary estimate.
