Bulgaria Current Account at -155.20 EUR Million  
Bulgarian current account balance shifted to EUR 155.2 million deficit in November of 2017 from a EUR 162.4 million surplus in the same month a year earlier. The goods and services account swung to EUR 229.0 million deficit from EUR 24.5 million surplus. Meantime, the secondary income surplus narrowed to EUR 61.9 million from EUR 183.9 million while the primary income rose to EUR 11.9 million surplus from EUR 46.0 million gap a year earlier. In the January to November period, the current account surplus declined to EUR 2523.1 million from EUR 2835.9 million in the corresponding period of 2016.

Also, prospects for employment declined significantly (2.5 from 6.6) while selling prices are expected to remain barely unchanged (at 5.0). Finally, the uncertain economic environment and the shortage of labour remain the main obstacles pointed for business development.

Consumer confidence in Bulgaria decreased to -26.1 in the fourth quarter of 2017 from -25.4 in the previous period. Consumers were more pessimistic about current conditions (-23.4 from -23.3) and general economic situation for the next 12 months (-14.8 from -14). Also, inflationary expectations (25.3 from 24.6) and unemployment prospects (15.2 from 14.4) advanced and saving propensity declined (-64.4 from -64.1). Meantime, shipments advanced at a softer 4.8 percent to BGN 4579.9 million, as a 14.7 percent increase in sales to EU countries offset a 12.7 percent tumble in those to non-EU countries. Considering the January to November period, the trade gap widened 284.4 percent to BGN 2191.1 million from BGN 570 million in the same period of 2016, as imports grew at a faster 15.3 percent and exports went up 11.8 percent.

Consumer prices in Bulgaria increased 2.8 percent year-on-year in December of 2017, easing from a 3.0 percent rise in the previous month. Prices advanced at a softer pace for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.8 percent compared to 4.9 percent in November); restaurants and hotels (2.8 percent compared to 3.1 percent) and miscellaneous goods and services (0.3 percent compared to 0.5 percent). Meanwhile, cost rose faster for housing and utilities (5.4 percent compared to 5.3 percent) and furnishings and household equipment (0.6 percent compared to 0.4 percent). In addition, inflation was steady for transport (3.3 percent, the same as in November) and health (0.4 percent) and prices declined less for communication (-0.7 percent compared to -2.1 percent) and clothing and footwear (-0.5 percent compared to -0.8 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.4 percent.

Conversely, higher sales were recorded for textiles, clothing and footwear (5.7 percent vs -1.7 percent); audio and video equipment; hardware, paints and glass, electrical household appliances (11.2 percent vs 6.9 percent) and information and communication equipment (8.3 percent vs 7.3 percent). Also, sales advanced for food (8.8 percent vs 5.9 percent). On a seasonally adjusted basis, retail sales went up 0.3 percent, following a 0.6 percent increase in October.

Bulgaria's economy advanced 3.9 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2017, higher than a 3.7 percent growth in the previous quarter and in line with preliminary estimates. It was the strongest expansion since the last quarter of 2016, boosted by household expenditure (4.6 percent vs 4 percent in Q2) and fixed investment (4.3 percent vs 3.9 percent). Meanwhile, government spending slowed (1.8 percent vs 2.6 percent). Also, exports continued to rise (4.1 percent vs 3.7 percent) and imports advanced at a softer pace (5.1 percent vs 6.5 percent). On a quarterly basis, the GDP grew 0.9 percent, compared to 1 percent in the second quarter and matching preliminary estimates.
