Bulgaria's economy advanced 3.1 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2018, below a preliminary estimate of 3.4 percent and down from a 3.4 percent rise in the previous period. It is the slowest expansion since the fourth quarter of 2014. Government spending rose less (3.6 percent vs 4.5 percent in Q2) and net external demand contributed negatively to growth, as exports fell further (-3.6 percent vs -1.9 percent) while imports grew (4.0 percent vs 5.0 percent). In contrast, household consumption (7.7 percent vs 7.5 percent) and fixed investment (7.0 percent vs 6.6 percent) went up faster. On a quarterly basis, the GDP expanded 0.7 percent, above a preliminary figure of 0.5 percent but down from a 0.8 percent rise in the second quarter of the year.

The number of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria increased 3.8 percent year-on-year to 739.3 thousand in October 2018, easing from a 4.2 percent rise in the previous month. There was an increase in all types of trips: professional purpose (2.8 percent); other purpose including guest and passing transit (4.7 percent) and holiday and recreation purpose (3.8 percent). The number of visitors from the EU went up 2.7 percent and accounted to 55.5 percent of the total. Tourist arrivals were higher from Germany (+3.9 percent); Romania (+1.2 percent); Poland (+7.6 percent) and the UK (+5.9 percent). In contrast, main declines were recorded from Austria (-1.8 percent); Italy (-3.7 percent) and Greece (-0.6 percent).

The annual inflation rate in Bulgaria rose to 3.7 percent in October 2018, up from 3.6 percent in the previous month. It remained the highest inflation rate since deflation ended in November 2016, as prices advanced faster for food & non-alcoholic beverages (3.3 percent from 3.2 percent in September); transport (9.2 percent from 8.4 percent); restaurant & hotels (5.3 percent from 5.1 percent) and communication (2.8 percent from 2.4 percent). In addition, cost fell less for clothing & footwear (-1.0 percent from -1.8 percent). Also, inflation was steady for housing & utilities (at 4.6 percent, the same as in the prior month) and health (at 0.3 percent); while prices slowed for recreation & culture (3.6 percent from 3.9 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (3.5 percent from 3.6 percent) and furniture & household equipment (1.8 percent from 2.2 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.7 percent, after a 0.3 percent gain in September.
