The number of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria went up 4.0 percent year-on-year to 619.9 thousand in December of 2018, after a 3.4 percent rise in the prior month. There was an increase in trips with all observed purposes: holiday and recreation (4.8%), other (3.8%), and professional (2.9%). The number of visitors from the EU rose 5.5 percent and accounted to 56.6 percent of the total. Tourist arrivals were higher from Romania (+8.5 percent); the UK (+46.3%); Germany (+14%) and Italy (+11.5%). In contrast, main declines were seen in arrivals from Greece (-3%); Czech Republic (-12.6%), Austria (-4.7%) and Belgium (-2.9%). Tourist Arrivals in Bulgaria averaged 851216.91 from 1991 until 2018, reaching an all time high of 3531567 in December of 2003 and a record low of 237256 in January of 2007.
