Belgium recorded a trade surplus of EUR 3,287.5 million in January 2026, widening sharply from EUR 212.9 million in the corresponding month of the previous year.
This also marked the largest surplus since October last year, as exports declined less than imports.
Year-on-year, exports fell by 4.6% to EUR 40,241.3 million, driven by lower shipments to both EU countries (-1.9%) and non-EU countries (-10.4%).
Meanwhile, imports dropped faster at 11.9% to EUR 36,953.8 million, with reduced purchases from EU countries (-10.3%) and non-EU countries (-14.8%).
For the full year 2025, the country posted a trade surplus of EUR 26,649.9 million, down from EUR 26,316.6 million in the same period a year earlier.
