Belgium Trade Surplus Soars to Record High

Belgium’s trade surplus soared to a record high of EUR 6,463.7 million in March 2026, widening sharply from EUR 488.1 million in the corresponding month of the previous year.

Year-on-year, exports climbed 6.3% to EUR 47,185.6 million, the highest since October 2024, driven by increased shipments to EU countries (9.4%), while exports to non-EU countries edged lower (-0.5%).

Meanwhile, imports declined by 7.2% to EUR 40,721.9 million, weighed down by reduced purchases from both EU countries (-2.5%) and non-EU countries (-14.7%).

Over the first three months of the year, the country posted a trade surplus of EUR 13,500.1 million, significantly higher than EUR 3,378.5 million in the same period a year earlier.

Belgium recorded a trade surplus of EUR 4,481.8 million in February 2026, widening from EUR 2,677.6 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. This also marked the largest surplus since September 2023 as exports fell softer than imports. Exports fell 2.0% year-on-year to EUR 40,949 million, driven by lower shipments to EU countries (-1.4%) and non-EU countries (-3.2%). Imports decreased by 6.7% to EUR 36,467.2 million, reflecting reduced purchases from both EU countries (-0.1%) and non-EU countries (-17.5%). Considering the first two months of 2026, the country posted a trade surplus of EUR 7,769.3 million, expanding from EUR 2,890.5 million in the same period a year earlier.

Belgium recorded a trade surplus of EUR 3,287.5 million in January 2026, widening sharply from EUR 212.9 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. This also marked the largest surplus since October last year, as exports declined less than imports. Year-on-year, exports fell by 4.6% to EUR 40,241.3 million, driven by lower shipments to both EU countries (-1.9%) and non-EU countries (-10.4%). Meanwhile, imports dropped faster at 11.9% to EUR 36,953.8 million, with reduced purchases from EU countries (-10.3%) and non-EU countries (-14.8%). For the full year 2025, the country posted a trade surplus of EUR 26,649.9 million, down from EUR 26,316.6 million in the same period a year earlier.
