Belgium’s gross domestic product expanded by 0.3 percent on quarter in the three months to September 2018, below a preliminary estimate of 0.4 percent and the same as in the previous period. Growth slowed for government expenditure (0.2 percent from 0.4 percent in Q2) and fell for household consumption (-0.2 percent from 0.3 percent). Meanwhile, fixed investment showed no growth, after a 0.1 percent gain in Q2; and net trade contributed positively to growth, as exports rose 0.8 percent (from 0.9 percent) while imports increased at a softer 0.2 percent (from 0.5 percent). Compared to the same quarter in 2017, the economy advanced 1.6 percent, lower than a preliminary estimate of 1.7 percent but higher than a 1.4 percent expansion in the second quarter.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.1 percent, following a 0.73 percent gain in October.

It is the steepest decline in industrial activity since December, as output shrank mostly for electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply (-21.8 percent vs -22.6 percent in August) and water collection, treatment & supply (-4.6 percent vs -3.3 percent). Also, manufacturing activity decreased (-2.3 percent vs 4.6 percent), amid lower production of vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (-11.7 percent vs -3.6 percent); food & beverages (-4.1 percent vs 2.1 percent) and other chemical products (-4.1 percent vs 12.1 percent). Meantime, production grew at the same pace for mining & quarrying (1.4 percent). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial production slumped 4.5 percent, following a 3 percent rise in the previous month.
