Consumer prices in Belgium rose 1.39% year-on-year in March of 2018 following a 1.48% increase in February. It is the lowest inflation rate since February of 2016, mainly due to a slowdown in cost of housing and utilities (1.22% compared to 1.69%); transport (1.25% compared to 1.47%); restaurants and hotels (2.42% compared to 3.29%); and miscellaneous goods and services (1.55% compared to 1.73%). Also, prices fell for communication (-0.33% compared to 0.17%). On the other hand, cost increased more mainly for food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.67% compared to 1.32%); and recreation and culture (1.86% compared to 1.09%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.14% after 0.15% in February. Main upward pressure came from prices of fruit, travels abroad, tobacco, bread and cereals, sugar, chocolate and jam. However, motor fuels, holiday villages, hotel rooms, natural gas and flowers and plants have had a decreasing effect on the index.

Belgium GDP Growth Rate at 0.50 percent  
Belgium's gross domestic product grew by 0.5 percent on quarter in the last three months of 2017, unrevised from the preliminary estimate and above the the previous period's 0.2 percent expansion. Net external demand contributed 0.3 percentage points to GDP growth, as exports jumped 2 percent (vs -0.6 percent in Q3) while imports rose at a slower 1.6 percent (vs -0.7 percent in Q3). In addition, government spending increased 0.7 percent, faster than a 0.4 percent gain in the previous period. On the other hand household consumption expansion slowed to 0.1 percent from 0.2 percent in the previous quarter while fixed investment showed no growth and changes in inventories subtracted 0.1 percentage points to growth. Year,on-year, the GDP rose by 1.9 percent, after a 1.6 percent increase in the third quarter. In 2017, the economy grew by 1.7 percent, compared with 1.5 percent in 2016.
