Meanwhile prices rose at a softer pace for: housing and utilities (3.88 percent compared to 3.94 percent); transport (1.70 percent compared to 2.55 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (1.62 percent compared to 1.66 percent) and recreation and culture (0.78 percent compared to 1.08 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.19 percent, following a 0.13 percent rise in November.

Belgian industrial production jumped by 9.5 percent year-on-year in October 2017, following a downwardly revised 2.5 percent gain in the previous month. It was the sharpest increase in industrial production since December last year, as output rose at a faster pace for manufacturing (8.5 percent from 1.7 percent in September) and electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (9.8 percent from 7.9 percent). In addition, mining and quarrying jumped 23.8 percent, rebounding from a 14 percent drop in the previous month. By contrast, water collection, treatment and supply shrank by 8 percent, following a 1.5 percent contraction in September. On a monthly basis, industrial production grew by 2.5 percent.

The Belgian economy grew by 0.3 percent on quarter in the three months of September 2017, unrevised from the preliminary estimate and following a 0.5 percent expansion in the previous period. Household consumption rose at a softer pace (0.2 percent from 0.4 percent in Q2) and government spending contracted (-0.2 percent from 0.3 percent in Q2). Meanwhile, fixed investment jumped 1 percent after a 0.9 percent increase in the previous three-month period and foreign demand contributed positively as imports fell 0.3 percent (0.8 percent in Q2) and exports declined at a slower 0.2 percent (0.7 percent in Q2). Year-on-year, the economy grew by 1.7 percent.
