Belgium’s economy expanded 0.4 percent on quarter in the three months to June of 2018, following a 0.3 percent growth in the previous period and above the preliminary estimate of 0.3 percent. Growth advanced faster for fixed investment (0.9 percent from 0.4 percent in Q1) and output rebounded for household consumption (0.4 percent from -0.2 percent). Also, net external demand contributed positively to GDP growth (0.3 percentage points), as exports increased 0.7 percent (from 0.1 percent) and imports rose 0.4 percent (from -0.2 percent). Compared to the same quarter of 2017, gross domestic product rose 1.4 percent, also above the flash reading of 1.3 percent and after a 1.5 percent gain in the first quarter. Still, it was the weakest growth since the last quarter of 2016.

Belgium's annual inflation rate rose to 2.24 percent in August 2018 from 2.17 percent in the prior month, hitting its highest level since April last year. Prices advanced faster mainly for housing & utilities (3.51% vs 3.09% in July), especially natural gas (12.8% vs 11.5%) and domestic heating oil (12.7% vs 12.0%); and transport (4.68% vs 4.19%), namely liquefied petroleum gas or LPG (33.5% vs 29.7%). Moreover, cost rebounded for communications (0.77% vs -0.83%). Additional upward pressure came from prices of: recreation & culture (1.41% vs 1.17%); health (0.58% vs 0.55%) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (4.27% vs 3.02%). Conversely, inflation slowed mostly for food and non-alcoholic beverages (1.44 % vs 2.40%); miscellaneous goods & services (1.21% vs 1.32%) and restaurants & hotels (2.03% vs 2.29%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.14 percent, easing from a 0.38 percent gain in the previous month.
