Austria Wholesale Prices Post Strongest Rise Since 2023

Wholesale prices in Austria rose by 6.9% year-on-year in May 2026, accelerating from a 6.7% rise in the previous month and marking the strongest annual gain since February 2023.

The increase was primarily driven by price increases for plastics and rubber in primary forms (53.1%), other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products (44.9%), and motor spirit (30.1%).

Additional upward pressure came from higher prices for non-iron metals (16.9%), information and communication equipment (15.5%), waste and scrap (14.7%), other machinery and equipment (11.7%), watches and jewellery (11.4%), solid fuels (10.5%), and iron and steel (10.1%).

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices edged up 0.1% in May, slowing from a 1.1% increase in the previous month.

Wholesale prices in Austria increased by 6.7% year-on-year in April 2026, accelerating from a 5.4% rise in the previous month. This marked the highest reading since February 2023, as the war in the Middle East drove a sharp increase in energy costs. Prices rose sharply for other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products (54.8%), plastics and rubber in primary forms (39.4%), and motor spirit (32.3%). Additional upward pressure came from higher prices for watches and jewelry (14.5%), non-iron metals (13.8%), information and communication equipment (13.6%), and waste and scrap (10.5%). Prices also increased for flowers and plants (9.8%), coffee, tea, cocoa and spices (9.6%), other machinery and equipment (9.5%), iron and steel (8.3%), solid fuels (8.1%), and flat glass (8.0%). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices rose by 1.1%, easing from a 3.9% increase in March.

Wholesale prices in Austria rose by 5.4% year-on-year in March 2026, accelerating from 1.1% in the previous month. This marked the sharpest increase in wholesale prices since February 2023, driven primarily by higher energy costs, with other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products up 35.6% and motor spirits rising 27.2%. Other notable gains were seen in watches and jewelry (+15.7%), coffee, tea, cocoa and spices (+12.6%), information and communication equipment (+11.3%), and waste and scrap (+10.1%), alongside non-iron metals (+9.7%), machinery (+8.3%), flat glass (+8.0%), flowers and plants (+7.6%), and wood products (+6.9%). On the downside, prices fell for grain, seeds and animal feed (-14.9%), plastics and rubber in primary forms (-3.5%), hides and leather (-3.4%), stationery (-2.7%), and radio, television, and recording and reproduction equipment (-1.6%). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices jumped 3.9% in March, up from 0.7% in each of the previous two months.
