Prices slowed mostly for: housing & utilities (2.1% vs 2.3% in August), particularly heating oil (19.6% vs 24.3%); transport (3.8% vs 4.1%), due to fuel prices (13.9% vs 14%) and repairs of private transport (2.9% vs 3.2%); and household equipment (2.2% vs 2.8%), namely furnishings and floor coverings (2.5% vs 3.8%). Cost also increased less for miscellaneous goods & services (2.1% vs 2.2%); health (2.7% vs 2.8%) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (3.9% vs 4.0%) while rose at the same pace for restaurants & hotels (3.1%). Conversely, prices advanced faster for food & non-alcoholic beverages (1.3 percent vs 1.2 percent), such as meat (1.5% vs 1.1%); education (2.7% vs 2.2%) and recreation & culture (0.2% from no growth in August). On a monthly basis, consumer prices inched up 0.8 percent, after being flat in the previous month.

Producer prices in Austria rose 3.4 percent year-on-year in August 2018, the same pace as in the previous month. It remains the highest producer inflation since September of 2011, mainly due to rising prices in the energy sector (9.1 percent compared to 8.8 percent in July) - namely electricity and electricity supply prices - and for capital goods (1.2 percent compared to 1.1 percent), mostly machinery for other specific sectors and steel & light metal products. Meanwhile, producer inflation was steady for intermediate goods (at 3 percent) and prices were flat for consumer goods, after edging up 0.1 percent in the two preceding months. On a monthly basis, producer prices went up 0.2 percent, the same pace as in July.
