Austria Jobless Rate Ticks Up to 7.1% in May

Austria’s unemployment rate edged up to 7.1% in May 2026 from 7.0% in the corresponding month a year ago.

The total number of unemployed persons rose by 5,536 year-on-year to 301,676.

Among them, the female unemployment rate went up by 0.3 percentage points to 7.0%, with the number of unemployed women rising by 6,643 to 140,381, while the rate for men and other genders remained broadly steady at 7.1%, with the number of unemployed individuals falling by just 1,107 to 161,295.

Dependent employment increased by 6,000 from a year earlier to 3,967,000.

Employment among women rose by 6,000 to 1,863,000, whereas employment among men and other genders remained unchanged at 2,104,000.

Including training participants, the total number of unemployed persons and those enrolled in labour market programs reached 378,278, up by 2,931 from the previous year.

Austria’s unemployment rate rose to 7.5% in April 2026, up from 7.3% in the same month a year earlier. The total number of unemployed persons increased by 8,516 year-on-year to 320,316. Among them, the female unemployment rate rose by 0.3 percentage points to 7.4%, with 148,659 women unemployed, while the male and other genders’ rate remained steady at 7.6%, totaling 171,657 individuals. Dependent employment increased by 23,000 compared with April 2025, reaching a total of 3,958,000. Employment among women rose by 16,000 to 1,860,000, while employment among men and other genders declined by 7,000 to 2,098,000. Including training participants, the total number of unemployed and those enrolled in programs reached 398,342, up by 5,711 from the previous year.

Austria’s unemployment rate rose to 7.5% in March 2026, edging up from 7.4% a year earlier and marking the lowest level in four months. The total number of unemployed persons increased by 6,380 year-on-year to 322,727. Among them, the female jobless rate rose by 0.3 percentage points to 7.1%, with 143,503 women unemployed, while the male and other genders’ unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.9%, totaling 179,224 individuals. Dependent employment remained largely stable at 3,952,000, up slightly by 4,000 compared with March 2025. Women in dependent employment increased by 12,000 to 1,868,000, while men and other genders fell by 8,000 to 2,084,000. Including training participants, the number of unemployed and enrolled in training programs reached 400,561, a rise of 3,488 from the previous year.
