Argentina GDP Expands More Than Expected

Argentina’s economy grew 2.3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, above forecasts of 1.7% and accelerating from a 2.1% increase in the previous quarter.

The strongest sector gains came from fishing (27.5%), agriculture, livestock, hunting and forestry (18.1%), and mining and quarrying (12.3%).

Other notable expansions were recorded in financial intermediation (7.5%), private households with domestic service (6.3%), and hotels and restaurants (2.8%), with the latter mainly supported by informal employment.

In contrast, manufacturing contracted 1.7% and public administration declined 1.4%, marking the weakest performances.

On the demand side, exports rose 9.8%, leading growth, while private consumption increased 2.7%, supported by stronger imports of final consumer goods and automobiles.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the economy expanded 0.7%.

Argentina’s economy grew by 2.1% year-on-year in the December quarter of 2025, falling short of expectations for a 2.2% expansion and slowing from a 3.3% increase in the previous quarter. The slowdown was driven by renewed weakness across several key sectors with manufacturing production still in contraction (-2.2% vs. -2.4% in Q3) and wholesale and retail trade shrinking markedly (-5.0% vs. 0.6%). In contrast some areas still drove expansion with growth in agriculture surging significantly (16.1% vs. 0.8%) as the post drought rebound intensified while utilities remained in contraction (-0.7% vs. -0.8%). Transportation and communications also accelerated slightly (2.2% vs. 1.8%) and financial intermediation posted strong gains (17.2% vs. 28.4%). On a quarterly basis Argentina’s GDP rose 0.6% continuing a 0.3% increase in the previous period.

Argentina’s economy grew by 3.3% year-on-year in the September quarter of 2025, falling short of expectations of 3.5% and slowing from an upwardly revised 6.4% increase in the previous quarter. The slowdown was driven by renewed weakness across several key sectors, with manufacturing production contracting (-2.4% vs. 6.9% in Q2) and wholesale and retail trade slowing markedly (0.6% vs. 10.3%). Growth in agriculture also cooled significantly (0.8% vs. 4.8%) as the post drought rebound faded, while utilities remained in contraction (-0.8% vs. -1.1%). By contrast, some areas showed resilience, with transportation and communications accelerating slightly (1.8% vs. 1.4%) and financial intermediation posting strong gains (28.4% vs. 26.7%). On a quarterly basis, Argentina’s GDP rose 0.3%, reversing a 0.1% contraction in the previous period.
